Nelson Wagner

Having endured a lengthy and difficult illness, Nelson Wagner passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 at the age of 66 years surrounded by family. At all times throughout his ordeal, his grace and dignity remained intact as did his wit and sense of humour.

He is survived by his wife Edith; son Jason; daughter Kathryn (Jason); sister Mary Ann Roscoe; brother Mike Roscoe (Laraine Taylor); as well as numerous nieces, extended family, and friends.

A proud Veteran, he served Canada for 23 years in high level capacities, retiring in 1997 as a Lieutenant-Colonel. In February, he announced his retirement from his position as Associate Vice President, Facilities Management, at the University of Regina, a job he loved.

Other loves included golf, basketball (especially when the Raptors played), music (except country), all things ‘techie’, his dogs, and above all else, his family.

Nelson expressly specified that there be no funeral service. Flowers gratefully declined. Friends so wishing may make memorial donations to the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan, 200 – 4545 Parliament Avenue, Regina, SK S4W 0G3 or online at www.cancerfoundationsask.ca.

He will forever live in our hearts.

Having worked with Nelson in the Ministry of Advanced Education and then again when he went to the UofR, I gained considerable respect for his intelligence, outstanding demeanour, diligence, integrity and wit as well as “drive"… he would have liked that last word, as we exchanged puns on every occasion we could - trying to out do each other whether it was on the golf course or at work. He will be greatly missed as a friend and colleague to many. God Bless...

To Edith and family. I got to know Nelson the last few years through golfing with him and his participation in our golf pool. His positive attitude and resilience throughout his battle always amazed me. I never once heard him complain and he always had nothing but positive things to say. He had a real passion for golf and we felt very fortunate that he was able to get out and play with us as much as he had these last few summers. Again, never complaining about the battle he was fighting. Even in our exchange of emails before he passed he still expressed his sense of humor and great spirit. On behalf of my wife Suzanne and me, please accept our deepest condolences. He will be missed.

Dear Edith and family, I had the honour to work with Nelson at the University as well. Nelson and I worked on a number of committees together and I appreciated the time he took to assist others. His sense of humour was always a bright spot, even during the most stressful situations. He was a dedicated, loyal hard worker who had tremendous vision for what the University could be. We loved to make small talk about RVing and other common interests. May the many fond memories you share with Nelson bring you comfort in your time of sorrow.
