Municipal Cemetery
Kent Municipal Cemetery – 5989 Limbert Rd, Agassiz
Kent Municipal Cemetery, also known as the Old Agassiz Cemetery, is a historic burial ground located at 5989 Limbert Road on Limbert Mountain, approximately 3 km west of Agassiz, British Columbia. Established in 1895, the same year as the District of Kent's incorporation, the cemetery served as the primary burial site for early settlers, including members of the Agassiz family, Indigenous individuals, and Chinese railroad workers. It was officially closed for new interments in 1981.
Over time, natural erosion and overgrowth have obscured many grave markers, leading to the discovery of numerous unmarked graves through ground-penetrating radar surveys. In response, local historians and community members formed the Old Cemetery Preservation Society to restore and preserve the site. Their efforts include improving signage, adding resting benches, and seeking heritage status for the cemetery. A notice board listing known burials is available at the entrance gate.
