Common Questions

Generally, no. Embalming is mandatory only when a deceased person is transferred out of province—or internationally—and is strongly recommended for public viewings with an open casket. Embalming preserves, sanitizes, and restores natural appearance, offering peace of mind to family and guests.

Absolutely. A viewing or visitation can take place exactly as it would for a burial, with either an open or closed casket prior to the cremation.

Yes. Families may attend our crematory to see the casket or cremation container placed into the chamber. Because the full process lasts up to two hours, most families stay for the initial moments and depart afterward.

Yes. In British Columbia, 25% of the purchase price is placed in a perpetual‐care fund that guarantees ongoing maintenance of the cemetery grounds.

Provincial regulations require the body to be in a rigid, combustible container for safe handling and dignified placement into the cremation chamber. Options range from reinforced cardboard to traditional wood caskets.

No legal requirement exists unless the person’s identity is uncertain. Hospitals tag each deceased individual with a wristband, and our staff verify all paperwork to ensure proper identification.

You may scatter on property you own. Public or private lands—parks, beaches, golf courses—require written permission. On water, we recommend biodegradable urns that sink gently. Alternatives® also offers an annual, licensed scattering on local B.C. waters and provides a certificate with exact latitude and longitude. Cemeteries offer designated scattering gardens and interment options as well.

Yes. After the ceremony the casket is transported to our crematorium instead of a cemetery, with no difference in how the service itself is conducted.

Ashes typically weigh 5–7 lb (2.3–3.2 kg). Select an urn of at least 200–250 cubic inches to ensure a proper fit. We stock many styles and sizes.

Yes. We can portion ashes for keepsake urns, cremation jewelry, or scattering in multiple locations—whatever best honours your loved one’s wishes.

As District Registrars for B.C. Vital Statistics, we file all paperwork once the physician supplies the Medical Certificate (within 48 hours of death). We deliver the Certificates of Death within 5–7 business days. Most families need one original and three notarized copies for estate, banking, and insurance matters.

• Care facility, hospice, or private residence (with Notification of Expected Death in the Home): within about two hours of notification.
• Hospital deaths: generally two to three days, as we must wait for the physician’s release. We stay in contact with the hospital until transfer is complete.

Most cemeteries advise waiting three to six months after burial for soil to settle. We’ll help you design a marker, complete cemetery paperwork, and meet all size and material regulations.

Pre‑planning locks in today’s prices, spares your family last‑minute decisions, and ensures your personal wishes are honoured. Flexible payment plans are available through insured funeral funding.
