Victor was born in Coaldale, Alberta to Bernard and Margareta Dick; the fifth of eight children. He grew up on their family farm during the difficult years of the Depression but experienced a loving family and close-knit circle of relatives within their Mennonite church community.
After high school, Victor completed teacher training at the University of Calgary and taught in a one-room school in rural Alberta. He changed his career path and was accepted into the School of Medicine at the University of Manitoba in 1954. Victor and his childhood friend Helen Pauls developed a loving relationship. They were married in Coaldale on September 11, 1955.
They began their life together in Winnipeg where Victor continued his medical studies and Helen worked as a maternity nurse. During this time their first two children were born, Margaret and Elli. Victor then worked as a family physician in Steinbach, Manitoba for six years followed by a one year Residency in Anesthesia in Winnipeg. By this time Dorothy, Ken and Linda had joined the family. In 1966, they moved to Manitou, Manitoba where Victor was the sole doctor providing care at the town’s small hospital.
In 1971, the family moved to Abbotsford, BC where Victor established a family practice at the Cannon Clinic. He provided care and leadership in several Abbotsford nursing homes and served as Chief of Staff at the neighbouring Matsqui Sumas and Abbotsford (MSA) Hospital. In the latter role, he worked closely over several years with municipal and provincial government bodies to help plan the building and transition to the current Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Center.
After a 48-year medical career, Victor took steps toward retirement. Though he left his private practice, he continued his work as Medical Director at the Menno Home, providing care in both German and English. He kept his medical skills sharp doing surgical assists at the hospital.
Victor and Helen loved visiting their children and their growing families living locally or abroad. Victor volunteered his time providing medical services in both the DR Congo and Nepal.
Victor is pre-deceased by his wife of 63 years, Helen (Pauls), and his grandson Ryan Tweed. He is survived by his 5 children and their spouses Margaret (Gerry) Derksen, Elli (Don) Hiebert, Dorothy (Warren) Janzen, Ken (Darlene) Dueck, Linda (Dale) Tweed, 15 grandchildren and their partners, 18 great-grandchildren, his sister Erna (Henry) Hubert, and his Pauls in-laws Elfrieda Dick, Victor (Joan) Pauls, Margaret (Harry) Heidebrecht, Ernie (Herma) Pauls.
Victor was known for his gentle humor, thoughtful wisdom, loyalty and integrity, not only as a skilled physician but also as a husband, father, grandfather and brother. He lived with a deep faith in God and a complete assurance of his eternal heavenly home. Victor will be greatly missed.
