Richard Norman Sacher

Richard Norman Sacher

June 6,  1936 - Sept 6, 2025

Richard passed away with loved ones by his side on Saturday, September 6th at Wascana Grace Hospice at William Booth Care Home. His beloved Saskatchewan Roughriders were on the TV. He was 89.

Richard was well lived and well loved in his 89 years. Born in Lampman, Saskatchewan to Joseph and Theresa Sacher he was the youngest of their five children. Growing up in Willmar (Sk) there was no shortage of stories of the ‘old times’. Stories of potatoes, pillows on windows and cars that were parked for the long winters. “You still don’t see snow like the old days, we had to take a shovel in the house with us to get out in the morning.”

At 16 he started working with CP Rail with his dad, eventually ending up on a bridge crew. Anyone who knew him heard more than one story from the CPR days. Although it sounded like some rowdy times he always spoke fondly of those days.

It was in these CPR days that he eventually met his wife, the love of his life, Darlene.  They were married Sept 5, 1970 and moved to Regina shortly after where they would build and live their entire life together, raising two daughters.

In 1974 Richard made the move to Ipsco where he worked the rest of his career until retirement in 2001. “Cutting scrap steel outside in the dead of winter” was among many jobs that simply reminded us he worked hard to provide for his family. He was a class act reminder of someone who, no matter what was put before him, carried on and ‘took care of business’. Always looking after his wife and his two daughters and eventually 3 grandchildren whom he loved so much.

After the loss of his wife, Darlene, to cancer in 2003 he never remarried. He simply lived a quiet life in his retirement enjoying his sports, westerns, classic country and polka music. He was always one to hand out a lesson in cribbage or to try and take your money playing 31.

He was an avid CFL football fan who always put the Riders first. He was also an NHL lover, cheering on his Jets and any other Canadian team (except Montreal, of course).

Spending time with his sisters was something he loved and looked forward to, whether it was a casino trip, birthday celebrations or just hanging out visiting.

He loved his cats, after the classic “we don’t need no cats around here” he grew to befriend and love them dearly. Some treats and a laser pointer were never far away!

A steady force in life he was loved and loved dearly. He was an amazing father and papa. He will be missed dearly but remembered well.

Richard is survived by by his daughters Chrystle and Mona (Clayton) and his three grandchildren; Sara (Luc), Zachary (Morgan) and Samantha. As well as various nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife Darlene, his parents Joseph and Theresa, and his siblings; Elsie (Wes) Ludtke, Phyllis (Harrison) Haygrarth, Tillie (Wilf) Rothwell and Lawrence (Elaine) Sacher.

The family would like to thank the Nurses and staff at The Wascana Grace Hospice and Pasqua Hospital’s 3D and Palliative Care wards for their care and support.

At his request there will be no service.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Regina Humane Society as Richard just loved his cats so much.
