It is with great sadness, along with much appreciation for a long life well lived, we say goodbye to the last family member of a generation in announcing the peaceful passing of Elizabeth A. Petersen (Betty) just three months and two days short of reaching her 102nd birthday.
Betty was born December 15, 1920 in Elfros, Saskatchewan to parents Francis and Emily Stittle. Betty grew up on the family farm surrounded by the love of her parents and 11 brothers and sisters.
Betty was also a loving Daughter, Sister, Sister-in-law, Wife, Aunt, Great-Aunt, Great-Great-Aunt and Great-Great-Great-Aunt, a Cousin, as well as a loving and caring Friend to many.
After completing her education, Betty worked as a secretary/stenographer enjoying employment with various businesses and organizations throughout her life, the last one being with SGI head office in Regina, Saskatchewan.
Betty was a very intelligent, independent, active, well read, classy lady who possessed an exceptional memory for dates and details right up until her last days on Earth. She also loved visits from family and friends, big family gatherings, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles, knitting, writing letters, dancing (especially with her dear friend Phillip), the Saskatchewan Roughriders, watching curling and baseball on TV, shopping, Casino visits and going for car rides around Regina to see all the changes taking place over the years.
Betty also liked to travel and was fortunate to see and enjoy many exciting places while making new friends along the way. She enjoyed and talked about both the east and west coasts of Canada and many places in between such as the United Kingdom, Hawaii and Alaska to name a few.
In her later years, Betty joined St. Matthew’s Anglican Church in Regina and it provided a wonderful spiritual awakening and immeasurable enjoyment. Here she acquired new and dear friendships through various church activities, those being the “greeter with a big smile” for everyone entering the church on Sunday mornings. She also belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary and participated in the many fashion shows, teas and bazaars which she enjoyed to the fullest. When St. Matthew’s had to close its doors, Betty expressed extreme disappointment.
Betty lived independently in Regina for most of her life. However, at the age of 96 years young in 2016 she made the decision to move to Qu’Appelle House, a Level 1 and 2 care home. She first moved into an independent suite which she thoroughly enjoyed for a few years. When COVID-19 entered the picture it became more difficult to adjust to the many lockdowns and visitor restrictions which led to her decision to move to the Level 2 care and accommodation within the building. Betty thought very highly of all the staff and for the excellent care and attention she received. She also cherished all the new friendships she made during her entire 6 year stay at Qu’Appelle House.
We, as Betty’s entire family would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the staff for the excellent care and attention provided to our loved one and to her many friends over the years (especially her dear friend Frances) who loved her as we did and for being so kind to her over the many years. We would also like to thank the caring staff at Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services for their kindness and the information provided to the family at their time of need.
Cremation has taken place and at Betty’s request. She will be laid to rest in the Stittle family plot in Elfros, Saskatchewan at a later date.
