Michael George Spooner (Mike) was born on February 26, 1980, to Dave and Debbie Spooner in Regina, and from that moment on, he brought the fun. Socializing at an early age he would be found where the work was. His first official job was serving as the dedicated gear shifter in the family half-ton truck—a role he took very seriously. Mike grew up enjoying being at Pasqua lake at Lynda’s and learning to waterski in the lake. The family moved to Qu’Appelle in 1989 and Mike quickly made friends within the community.
Mike’s school years were spent playing hockey and making friends. He believed in working hard and playing hard. Never one to shirk work he entered the construction concrete world. From a young age he enjoyed working with his hands and could build anything. His keen eye for detail and precision was showcased in all his projects. He transitioned to working in the mining industry and discovered another group of people to connect with and expand into his community. When the mine flooded in 2006, he came home and worked within the community. In 2009 Mike dipped his toes into working for himself and in 2015 Primal Concrete started and the phone never stopped ringing. Mike’s commitment to the community was shown by hiring workers from the area. He always had time to do startup projects for his parents and his sister. The quality of work was noted through word of mouth and his portfolio grew. His repeat customers would call and prebook for the next
year. There would be garage pads, sidewalks, basements and patios. He always had a story of the interesting projects and photos to show of the work he was doing.
In 2004 he met the love of his life Janine Morris. The adventures blossomed. Travelling was their passion and would go anywhere on a whim. Janine would propose the idea, and Mike would say “Lets’ Go!” and the connections with others and the stories continued.
Choosing to stay in Qu’Appelle Mike and Janine bought a house in 2009 for their love to grow. Renovating their 1940s home was no small feat. They lived in a camper while Mike transformed the house one project at a time—a challenge he somehow managed to make look easy. Using Janine’s vision, he transformed the living area to be able to host gatherings. His great work is evident everywhere in his home. Mike was proud of the back yard patio. It was the gathering place showcasing his vision with glow in the dark accents. The patio is a favourite of the family.
Welcoming Maddison in 2017, Mike blossomed into a father. His family became his top priority. Cruising in Big Red with a car seat became the norm. Maddison’s first word was Dad and Mike would have a grin every time she said dad. In 2019 Kingston joined the Spooner household. Mike and Janine could be seen outside with the two kids enjoying all the seasons.
Mike’s connections with his mining friends gave them the opportunity to move to Kamloops for a winter. Packing up a camper and heading to BC for a "mild" winter with two little kids and a large bloodhound sounded perfectly reasonable to Mike. Mike was always up for being outside spent exploring logging trails, fires in bush and hiking to waterfalls.
Weston joined the fun in 2022 after a long season of winter camping. Family time was important to Mike and on frequent occasions, they were on an adventure. The numerous videos and photos showcase his love. On Mike and Janine’s 20th anniversary they got married with all their people surrounding them. He often referred to that as the best day ever.
Mike would often be seen talking to members of the community as he was out with the kids at the park and walking through the Prickly forest. Giving back to the community was important to him. Knowing kids always need an adventure, Mike used his equipment to build a giant snow hill for the community to enjoy—a project that quickly made him a local hero to the kids. Often his day started with a trip to the farm to see his parents and would often spend time there helping them.
Mike was known for his easy smile, quick wit, and ability to turn a simple conversation into a great story. He loved teasing people just enough to make them laugh and could make friends anywhere he went. If there was a crowd, chances are Mike was in the middle of it, telling a story and getting everyone smiling. Mike had passion for cooking. BBQ was not a season it was year round. Mike used this skill to help others during covid he put the call out if anyone needed a meal he would deliver it no questions asked. His strong will and determination drove his passions he ensured every project he completed would be up to his standards and be good enough for his own home.
Even when Mike became sick he did not lose his passion for life and giving back to the people that were important to him. Filling his days with meaningful time with family friends became his priority.
Janine would like to thank everyone that helped support Mike and the family. Mike would want everyone to remember the good times, share a few stories, have a laugh and hold on to love. If a barbecue happens, raise a Pilsner in his memory, even better.
To honor Mike's memory, family and friends will gather at a later date to share stories, memories, and companionship.
