Longene "Geno" James Burstyk

Longene "Geno" James Burstyk

It is with extreme sadness to announce the passing of  Longene “Geno” James Burstyk on October, 24, 2025 at the age of 64 years. Geno was born April 13, 1961 in Indian Head and passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his parents Leighton & Fanny Burstyk and siblings Susan Smith (Doug) & Dana Burstyk. Geno is survived by his loving partner Debby Nelson, Step son Derek Nelson (Samantha), Step Daughter Kristin Nelson (Aaron), grandkids Leo & Vivie, Son Nathan Burstyk, Siblings Raymond Burstyk & Shirley Heinemann, Nieces and Nephews Terry Smith (Tina), Vicky Neiser (Colin), Chala Frank (Gary), brother-in-laws Ernie Speiler and Robert Speiler and all extended Family & Friends who have supported us through this journey. Geno’s career consisted of 35 years with the PFRA in Indian Head and Regina.  He was a hardworking and proud man and enjoyed his lengthy career. Geno made  friends everywhere he went and that was especially true for our Sherwood Forest family.  He loved the site out at  Sherwood Forest and did everything he could to make it a better place for everyone.  He especially took pride in his ‘twisted forest’ on hole number nine so everyone had an easier time hunting for their lost golf balls. To call Geno extraordinary hardly captures the truth. He was someone who changed lives with his courage and kindness.  He was known to always lend a helping hand to anyone that needed it.

Even while enduring treatments that no one should have to face, he stayed positive. When he took his last breath, it was not defeat. Cancer touched his body, but never his spirit. His smile, laugh, and teasing ways made people laugh even on the hardest days. Cancer never defined him — his spirit did. Now, we can imagine him free from pain, standing on a golf course with his pals or cheering on the Riders or the Blue Jays with dear friends. His fight is over, but his legacy — courage, compassion, laughter and stories will live on, reminding us all to appreciate and enjoy life to the fullest! Geno, this is our ultimate sacrifice, to let you go to be free from pain. A grief beyond words, but also a release filled with love. Until we see you again… A small celebration of life will follow. In lieu of flowers, you are invited to make a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society. Canadian Cancer Society | Canadian Cancer Society
