Kenneth Smorang

October 26th, 1940 - August 7th, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we share about the passing of Kenneth (Ken) Frank Smorang on August 7th, 2025.

Ken was born and raised in Pine Falls, Manitoba where he met and married the love of his life, Gail. They embarked on a journey together that brought them to live in and travel amongst many parts of Canada, eventually settling with their four children in BC.

Ken was a hardworking man who was devoted to providing for his family. His career in sales over the years, both in the lumber and paper product industries, came to an end when he embraced retirement at the age of 62. Ken's transition into retirement allowed him to commit more time to the hobbies he loved.

With an exceptional talent for woodcarving, Ken was a longtime member of the Central Fraser Valley Woodcarvers. Ken enjoyed competing and he and his award-winning carvings were well known in the carving world. While being an artist himself, he was also a well-respected woodcarving teacher, mentor, and friend to those in his community over the years.

Ken was also a member of the Abbotsford Horseshoe Club where he showcased his love and talent for the sport through both competing and connection with players across BC and Canada.

Ken‘s truest joy in his life was his family. From lunch dates with his granddaughters to rank the best fast food spots in Abbotsford, to trying local breweries with his family and dog, Gracie, Ken made the most of each day and continued to embrace new experiences.

The title of “Papa” for Ken was a proud one. His relationships with both of his granddaughters were some of his most treasured and he often referred to them as the “lights of his life”. Papa, Cambree and Kaylee shared a mutual love for hockey, community, and fried chicken. These shared joys led them to many spontaneous adventures.

He had a quick wit and had a story or a joke to share on any occasion. If you were lucky enough to meet Ken, you wouldn’t soon forget him.

He is survived by his children Bill, Carolyn (Steve), Kristy, and Tim (Veronika); grandchildren Cambree and Kaylee; and beloved dog Gracie.

Ken was predeceased by his loving wife, Gail, in 2022, his parents Nick and Rose, and his brothers Carl and Donald.

Ken and his family are thankful for the care and support from the staff and volunteers at Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre and Cascade Hospice, as well as a special thank you to Doctor Tom Parsons. Ken chose to donate his body to the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine.

There will be no service as per Ken’s wishes.
