Stephen Hilmar Hovind passed away at the Fillmore Health Centre on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 after a short illness. He was born in the Perryville district in a small log cabin on the Austin Perry farm near Wishart, SK. He was the second son born to Richard and Elsie Hovind. He grew up on the family farm near Wishart where he and his brothers learned to work hard but always made time to have some fun too.
He was predeceased by his parents Richard and Elsie; brothers Albert, David, and Raymond; twin brothers Richard and James and sister Inez – the last 3 in infancy. He was also predeceased by his adopted son John Grosse, his in-laws Fritz and Barbara Beyer, sister-in-law Edna and nephew Andy.
He leaves behind his wife of 65 years Betty and their children Doug (Cindy) and their children Julian (Jennifer) and Francine (Chris); Cindee (Mark) Rowe and their children Steven (Amanda), Tyler (Breanne), Jesse (Anita), Madison (Reece), and Brody; Pamela (Dwayne) Service and their children Devany (Graham) and Tyson (Ariel); Tim (Verla) and their daughter Megan (Calvin); adopted son Winston McNab and his children Amanda, Amy, Lacey, Zachary, and Elizabeth. He was also the proud great-grandfather to Jaden, Zoey, Christian, Dakota, and Meadow. Also left to mourn his passing is his brother Ivan (Wendy) and their children Aaron and Savannah (Bo) and their daughter Arria; sisters-in-law Marianne and Iris, in-laws Joe and Sherry Beyer and Lawrence and Mae Beyer as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Steve owned and operated several service stations in B.C., Alberta, and Saskatchewan. He was also a promoter for Stampede Wrestling in the early 70’s when the family lived in B.C. He was an expert mechanic and could fix pretty much anything that was brought in to him. Through the years Steve farmed and he and Betty owned and sold miniature horses and other exotic animals. They moved to Fillmore and ran 33 Restaurant for 6 years with their son Tim. Steve then helped his sons with their landscaping and property maintenance business in Regina for several years. He was never happier than when he was on his riding mower cutting grass. He had a very dry sense of humor and could say the most ridiculous, outlandish things with such a straight face and wait to see if you caught on to the joke or not. He was also an avid Montreal Canadiens and Saskatchewan Roughriders fan. In his younger days he could often be found watching 2 different hockey games on TV and listening to another one on the radio all at the same time. He also really enjoyed deer hunting with Tim, John, and Bob Blohm and had many hilarious stories to tell about events that had happened while they were out hunting. Steve was a long time AA member and helped many people achieve and maintain their sobriety.
Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. in the Fillmore Memorial Hall, Fillmore, Saskatchewan.
