Helen Ethel Hooseman (Johnston)

January 29, 2026

Helen Ethel Hooseman (Johnston)

Born: 29 Sept 1937 – Selkirk, Manitoba

Death: 29 Jan 2026 – Langley, British Columbia

It is with great sadness that the family of Helen Ethel Hooseman (Johnston) announces her passing at the age of 88.

Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband, Phil, and her son, Kevin Allan. She is lovingly remembered by her sister Shirley; her children Perry and Kim (Wally); her grandchildren Harley (Abby), Amber (Matt), Ashley, Trina, Shane (Stacy); and her great-grandchildren Olivia, Hudson, Joseph, Trinity, and Orion.

Helen was born and raised in Selkirk, Manitoba, where she experienced the early loss of her father, Merritt. The family later moved to British Columbia, where Helen left school at a young age to enter the workforce. She worked in a bakery in Vancouver and later in the kitchens of Woolworths and Vancouver General Hospital.

Her greatest joy, however, was fostering children with Phil. Together, they opened their hearts and home to many children over the years, caring for them until permanent homes were found. Eventually, they fostered and raised Kevin. Phil, Helen, and Kevin retired to Summerland, BC, where they enjoyed camping trips, bingo nights, and a quieter, contented life. After Phil’s passing and Kevin’s declining health, Helen suffered a stroke and eventually moved to Langley to live with her daughter, where she continued to enjoy quiet days spent with family.

Helen will be deeply missed by her family and friends and remembered for her quick wit, cheeky smile, and love of story-telling. While her loss is felt keenly, her loved ones take comfort in knowing she is now at peace, reunited with Phil and Kevin.

In keeping with Helen’s wishes, no service will be held.

Messages of Condolence

Oh Nana how we will miss your constant repetitive stories from way back when, foot stomping and you getting mad at us for playing on our diddly-poos (devices), I will cherish the years we had with you and the times I spent my summers with you guys. Orion will miss the endless “bowling” games and playing different things with you and showing you his new stuff on his tablet. Rest easy nanny

Dear Nana,We weren’t ready to let you go, it all happened so fast. The house is too quiet, some nights, without you, even though I can still see you slouching in your rocking chair, and smell the faint smell of a fresh cigarette being lit. But, I know that you’re happy now, back with the love of your life, Papa, and Uncle Kevin. I knew you hadn’t been yourself for a long time. I’ll always remember the Nana who always made sure we were fed, had fresh iced tea for our backyard tea parties, the Nana who couldn’t miss her Bingo… many ups and downs, many stories and memories. No matter what, you’ll always be my Nana and I’m forever going to miss you. Save us a spot by the fire. Love you forever and always.
- Ashley
