Donald (Don) Malcolm Wilson

August 2, 2025

Donald (Don) Malcolm Wilson

A life well lived full of adventure and love, Donald Malcolm Wilson was born in Edmonton AB in 1948 and left family and friends in Regina SK on August 2, 2025. Don was predeceased by his parents James Wesley Wilson and Edith Winnifred Wilson nee Pope. Don lives on in the hearts of those who loved him dearly, his brother Curtis Wilson, step-sister, Karyn Scalise (Arnie Tiefenbach), best friend, Ron Keall and sweetheart Colette Forbes along with her family, Kay Niedermayer (Marthad, Hilal & Nour Nasralla), Graeme Niedermayer and Figg, the family border collie. Don happily participated in many gatherings of the Agnes Forbes (nee Welch) clan of Mortlach SK who considered him a good man and member of the family.

Don had a varied career including working on the pipeline, a seismic crew in the Arctic, a home building crew, drafting for a coal company, driving taxi and paratransit driver, a barista, a bit part actor and a Commissionaire. Don donated to and was a canvasser for charitable foundations, and volunteered with Access Communications and for the Wascana Freewheelers Cycling club. He was a caregiver to his father and made it a priority to keep in touch with family in Alberta. His early family relationships were nurtured through his grandparents and cousins providing him an identity founded in family, community and landscape.

Residing in many communities in western Canada, Don spent a brief time in California leaving behind his motorcycle to roam in a VW van. He studied at the University of Saskatchewan (psychology) and University of Victoria (history) and well as Camosun College (drafting). He later went on long bicycle tours of Europe, India, the middle east and north Africa on his favoured blue green Giant mountain bike that he purchased in 1988 in Rotterdam, Holland. Along these journeys Don made many friends and explored places he read and dreamed about through the years. Don was naturally curious and had a strong interest in the crusades, archaeology, old settlements, migration patterns and transportation routes (especially the railroad!).

In Canada, Don bicycled and camped between Victoria and Regina on four separate occasions! On these rides Don researched the communities along the Highway 3 and posted historical narratives online on an early website called the Virtual Crowsnest Highway. He later enjoyed cycling with the Wascana Freewheelers and for years helped organize the Great Annual Saskatchewan Pedal (GASP), an annual Saskatchewan Cycling Association bicycle tour with routes in diverse parts of the province.

It was on the GASP tours that he crafted videos featuring small settlements filmed on a Sony Handycam with added historical narratives that he shared via his website, Small Town Saskatchewan (https:\\STSK.ca) or on his YouTube channel Home Town Saskatchewan. Since 2006 Don created and shared over 900 videos that have been viewed over 2.5 million times!

Don loved life and did good things. Sugar, could he whistle a tune.

A big thank you to all of the staff at the Pasqua Hospital 4A and Wascana Rehab Hospice for the wonderful and respectful care. Our gratitude is boundless. Bless you.

A Celebration of Life will take place at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 8, 2025 at Knox Metropolitan United Church (2340 Victoria Ave, Regina).

My sympathy to Dons family and close friends. He was a regular patron of the Regina Public Library and placed many interlibrary loan requests. I remember him fondly and didn’t realize how well travelled he was or his interest in cycling. Rest In Peace Don ~ Janet C

To Curtis and the family and friends of Don Wilson. Please accept my message of condolence at the sad news of Don's recent passing.  The Wilsons were good neighbours of ours on Uhrich Avenue and my old friend  "Whiskers" Wilson, as I called him, & I attended the good old U of R at the same time. I remember Don as a very friendly, sincere person who certainly took good care of his parents in their latter years.  His very informative obituary certainly outlined his interesting life in excellent detail. RIP "Whiskers!"  ~ Dove Morgan, Regina, Sask

Very sad to hear the passing of Don, I had spoke with him via Email for about a year, watched many of his devoted small town sask videos. I often thought of him and his well known videos when driving through little unknown towns he had covered. My condolences to the family.  ~ Josh Schneider
