Lawrence "Garry" Barkwell

Lawrence “Garry” Barkwell, late of Regina, SK, peacefully passed away at the age of 79 years on July 25, 2020 after a long battle with cancer.

Garry was predeceased by his parents John and Edna Barkwell. He is survived by his beloved wife Sue; daughters Lauren (Perry) Rozon, Tracy Carrigan and much loved grandchildren Jaiden and Stephen; his brother Jim and Jim’s daughter Leanne Jorgensen; his sister Janice and her sons, Blake and Doug Winslow; brother-in-law Doug (Dianne) Fritz and his family Michael and Stacey Fritz and Melissa O’Neal.

Born north of Dysart, SK, Garry helped on the family farm before starting his banking career at the age of 19. He was promoted to bank manager at age 32. After spending 16 years in Ontario, in 1983 his family was transferred back to Sask. where he continued on until retirement. Garry was with the Royal Bank for 35 years and thereafter started and ran a family financial business along with his two daughters for 10 years. Garry was involved in many sports activities throughout his school years including track and field and baseball. He was an avid sports fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Blue Jays and of course the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Garry’s many interests included gardening, watching his grandchildren’s sports, mechanical repairs and travelling. We have been told by many that he would always welcome you with a warm smile and had a great sense of humour. Thank you to the Allan Blair Cancer Centre and the MSU at the Pasqua Hospital for their kindness and compassion for our family during this difficult time.

I am so very sorry to hear about Garry. My thoughts are with you Sue, Lauren & Tracy, Jim and Janice. The last time I saw Garry was at Gail Burnard's funeral in 2016. We had a good time "ribbing" each other and just generally getting caught up. Our paths crossed a number of times over the past few years and they were happy encounters, usually at family gatherings. Garry will be missed.

My sincere condolences on Garry's passing to Sue and the family. Finding out that we have lost another of our wonderful Moose Jaw Spa group is hard to accept. Garry was very prominent at these events from hosting the pre-supper cocktail hour, to his toasts and salt on pancakes. I can only echo Garry's words at one of these events where he said something along the lines of ..., things can change so quickly and we need to remember to be thankful for the times that we can share together. Thank-you Garry for your part in those memories.

I was the “girl next door” and though Suzette was a teenager while I was still in grade school, I observed the excitement when Garry arrived to pick up Suzette for a date, when they were engaged and married. I remember your Mom showing me the first “family of three” photo...she was bursting with pride and I thought “what a beautiful family”. Though on rare occasions because of time and distance, whenever our paths did cross over the years, I recall Garry’s wonderful smile and a kindness quality that looked so good on his face. You are in my thoughts and prayers, dear Suzette! You are fondly remembered

I was deeply saddened to hear Garry had passed away. I enjoyed "catching up" with Garry when our paths crossed, unfortunately that was mostly at funerals in the last few years. Garry was always genuinely interested in what was happening with other Bankers, he always had a smile and was easy to talk to. He will be missed, his involvement with the RBC pensioners will be missed any all. Our thoughts are with Sue and the entire family.

Much sympathy to you Suzette, your girls and grandkids. Also to Janice and Jim. My mom was very close to her Barkwell cousins and I have lots of happy memories of attending family functions and visiting with John, Edna and Uncle Lawrence. It was always great to run into you and Garry to catch up and reminisce even though this was often at funerals! Gary was always so proud of you and his girls and later his grandkids.
