Albert Edwin (Al) Siemens

February 20, 1944 - January 13, 2026
With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Albert (Al) Edwin Siemens. He died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on January 13, 2026. He is survived by his wife, Marianne Siemens (nee Regier), children Justin (Lori) and Heather (Brendon), grandchildren Wallis, Max, Peter, and Mason, brothers Neil (Juliana) and Lawrence (Carrie) and many nieces and nephews. Pre-deceased by his parents, Jacob and Helena and siblings Henry, Elizabeth, John, Agnes, William, and Erwin.
Al was born on February 20, 1944, near Jansen, Saskatchewan and grew up on a farm at Drake, Saskatchewan with his 8 siblings. He enjoyed regaling his family with stories of his early years at a one room country school through Grade 8, high school in the village of Drake and at Lanigan Central High School, where he was enthusiastically involved in sports, school performances, and public speaking, including as his class valedictorian. Post-secondary education took Al to Winnipeg for a Christian Education degree at Canadian Mennonite University and to the University of Saskatchewan for a Liberal Arts Degree, after which Calgary became home from 1970 until he and Marianne relocated to Victoria in 2023.
Al loved life - family life, social life with friends and his work life, firstly in corrections for a decade followed by a nearly 30-year exciting career in oil and gas, with BP Canada and MEG Energy, where he worked until his retirement in 2008. He also loved music, both as a listener and participant.
Al was devoted to his family. He and Marianne enjoyed 58 years of marriage. Al was always actively involved with his children's activities and was equally devoted to cheering on his grandchildren's pursuits at every opportunity. He and his family also traveled back to Saskatchewan often to spend time together with his siblings and large extended family. He cherished and was cherished by his nieces and nephews.
Al enjoyed the outdoors and many family holidays were spent in the Rocky Mountains, on beaches and on the water of both coastal and interior British Columbia, camping, hiking, canoeing, and skiing. After retirement, Al and Marianne traveled regularly in Europe, North and Central America, and the Pacific. Closer to home, they continued to enjoy keeping active in the mountains of BC and Alberta, golfing and hiking together. In their 80th year, their final trip together was spent in the backcountry at Mistaya Lodge in the Rocky Mountains. Al treasured and was enriched by these adventures but most of all, he treasured having these experiences together with Marianne.
In late 2024, Al was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and over the last 13 months his health quickly declined. He was grateful for the care he received from the team at BC Cancer, the Medical Ambulatory nurses at RJH, Community Health Services nurses, Dr. Jane Henderson and his family doctor, Dr. Stansfield.
Al lived his life with grace and generosity. He was unfailingly considerate and sensitive towards others. He carried himself with dignity and extended this same dignity to all. He loved people and laughter and offered gracious hospitality to anyone who had the good fortune of coming into his life. He was loved beyond measure.
