When someone you love is killed in a motor vehicle accident, the grief is sudden and devastating. In the midst of that shock, families are often unaware that financial support is available to help with funeral expenses, counselling, and ongoing living costs.

If the death resulted from a crash involving a motor vehicle in British Columbia, ICBC's Enhanced Care benefits may cover a significant portion of the costs your family is facing. Here's what you need to know.

What ICBC Covers

Under BC's Enhanced Care model — which applies to all crashes involving a motor vehicle, regardless of who was at fault — several benefits are available to the family of a person who has died.

Funeral expenses. ICBC covers funeral costs up to $10,616. This can include the funeral home's professional services, cremation or burial, a casket or urn, and related expenses. ICBC can either pay the funeral provider directly or reimburse the person who covered the costs. Keep all receipts — you'll need them for reimbursement.

Grief counselling. Each immediate family member is entitled to up to $4,440 in grief counselling per deceased person. Sessions can be provided by a registered counsellor, psychologist, psychiatrist, member of the clergy, or Indigenous elder, among others. Some providers can bill ICBC directly; otherwise, you pay and submit receipts for reimbursement. If a family member needs to travel more than 50 km one way to attend counselling, accommodation and travel expenses may also be covered with prior approval.

Death benefits. ICBC provides additional financial benefits to surviving dependants — including spouses, children, and others who depended on the deceased's income. These benefits are calculated based on the deceased's earnings and family situation, and your ICBC claim representative can walk you through what applies.

Who Is Eligible

These benefits are available to any person who dies as a result of a crash involving a motor vehicle in BC — whether they were a driver, passenger, cyclist, or pedestrian. Fault does not affect eligibility for Enhanced Care benefits.

The definition of "family" for grief counselling purposes is broad: it includes spouses and partners, children and stepchildren, parents and stepparents, grandparents, siblings, and others who had a family-like relationship with the deceased.
