BC Government Funeral Assistance Update: New Rates Effective April 15, 2026

The BC Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction has announced changes to the Burial or Cremation Supplement — the provincial program that helps cover funeral costs for families with limited financial resources. The updated rates and policy take effect on April 15, 2026.
If you're a family navigating a recent loss and wondering whether government assistance is available, or if you've already read our guide to BC government funeral assistance, here's what's changing and what it means for you.
What's Changing
The basic funeral service provider fee is increasing. The amount the ministry pays to the funeral provider for essential services is rising from $1,285 to $1,685. This is a meaningful increase — roughly 31% — and reflects the ministry's recognition that funeral costs have risen and providers need adequate funding to continue delivering dignified services to families in need.
Transportation reimbursement is being updated. When the deceased needs to be transported more than 32 kilometres, the ministry will now reimburse at $1.25 per kilometre. This is particularly relevant for families in rural and remote parts of British Columbia, where distances between communities and funeral providers can be significant.
Ferry costs will be covered at cost. For families in island or coastal communities, the ministry will cover ferry-related expenses including reservations, one vehicle and driver, and an additional passenger when needed. This is a practical change that acknowledges the transportation realities of many BC communities.
Separate coverage for some additional services is being removed. The ministry will no longer provide separate funding for embalming, dressing, and bereavement rites and ceremonies. These services may still be arranged and paid for by family or community members — but they will no longer be covered as part of the ministry supplement. The intent is to focus the supplement on the most essential burial or cremation needs.
What's Staying the Same
All other rates remain unchanged. The rates for cremation, burial, cemetery charges, and other covered items are not affected by this update.
The application process is unchanged. There are no changes to how families or funeral providers apply for the supplement, or to the documentation required (including the detailed quote from the funeral home).
Eligibility criteria are unchanged. The supplement remains available to help cover funeral costs for any person who dies in British Columbia when the estate and responsible family members do not have sufficient resources to pay. You do not need to be receiving BC Employment and Assistance to qualify.
Deaths before April 15, 2026 are not affected. If a death occurred before the new effective date, the funeral will be handled under the previous rates and policy.
What This Means for Families
For families who rely on the ministry supplement, the increase to the basic service fee is welcome news. The higher rate gives funeral providers more room to deliver the essential services families need — the respectful transfer of their loved one, the necessary paperwork, and a dignified cremation or burial — without cutting corners.
The removal of separate coverage for embalming, dressing, and ceremonies may affect some families who had hoped the ministry would fund these additional services. However, it's worth noting that Simple Cremation — which does not require embalming or dressing — remains fully covered and is the most common choice for Ministry-assisted funerals. Families and community members who wish to arrange a ceremony, viewing, or other additional services are still free to do so at their own expense.
