BC Government Funeral Assistance: Financial Help When Resources Are Limited

Not every family has the financial resources to cover funeral costs — and in British Columbia, there is government assistance available for exactly this situation. The BC Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction offers a funeral cost supplement to help cover the necessary expenses when a person dies in BC and there simply isn't enough money in the estate or among the family to pay for the arrangements.
This is one of the least well-known forms of financial assistance available to BC families, and understanding how it works can make a real difference during an already overwhelming time.
Who Is Eligible
The funeral cost supplement is available to help cover the costs of any person who dies in British Columbia, provided that the deceased's estate and responsible family members do not have the immediate resources to pay for the funeral.
An important point that many people don't realise: the deceased person and their family do not need to be receiving BC Employment and Assistance (income assistance or disability assistance) to qualify. The supplement is based on financial need at the time of the death, not on whether anyone was previously receiving government benefits.
If there are sufficient resources available — either from the estate or from the responsible family members — the ministry will not provide the supplement. But when resources genuinely aren't available, this program can help.
What the Supplement Covers
Where eligibility is established, the ministry will cover the cost of either cremation or burial. Specifically, the ministry may pay for:
A cremation container or casket. The ministry will cover the cost of a basic cremation container or a modest casket, depending on whether the family chooses cremation or burial.
The cremation or burial itself. This includes the direct cost of cremation or the grave opening and closing fees for a burial.
Transportation of the deceased. The ministry may cover the cost of transporting the body to the funeral home or crematorium.
The ministry pays for services at the lowest reasonable cost. The intent is to ensure a dignified disposition of remains, not to fund elaborate arrangements. Your funeral director can work directly with the ministry to arrange services within the approved parameters.
Special Circumstances
Deaths outside of BC. If the deceased was a BC Employment and Assistance recipient and died while temporarily outside of BC but within Canada, the ministry may cover transportation of the body back to BC, or the cost of cremation or burial in the province where the death occurred — provided prior approval is granted.
No family available. In cases where no suitable family member is available to act as the legal representative, the ministry can step in to make arrangements with a funeral home directly.
Recovery of costs. The ministry will seek to recover funeral costs from the deceased's estate whenever possible. If assets are identified after the funeral has been paid for, the ministry may request reimbursement from the legal representative.
How to Apply
To apply for the funeral cost supplement, contact the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction:
Toll-free: 1-866-866-0800
Online information: Funeral Costs — Province of British Columbia
The ministry will assess the financial situation of the estate and the responsible family members to determine eligibility. It's best to contact them as early as possible in the process — ideally before finalising arrangements with a funeral home — so that approvals can be granted in a timely way.
How Your Funeral Director Can Help
At Alternatives Funeral & Cremation Services, we work regularly with the BC Ministry on behalf of families who need financial assistance with funeral costs. We understand the program's requirements, the approved service levels, and the paperwork involved.
If you're unsure whether your family qualifies, or if you're trying to figure out how to cover the cost of a loved one's funeral with limited resources, please don't hesitate to reach out. We can help you understand your options and, if appropriate, coordinate directly with the ministry on your behalf.
