Maria Ramos Urrutia

October 27, 1940 – July 7, 2023

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Maria Urrutia, who departed from this world into the arms of heavenly angels on July 7, 2023. She was surrounded by her loving family and friends, who tendered their comfort and support.

A loving wife and devoted mother, Maria poured her heart and soul into her family.  She will be dearly missed by her children Karlo (Nhaji) Urrutia, Ken (Jocel) Urrutia, and her grandchildren Kaden, Nikodemus, Kyzec, Karlinha, Kennedy, and Kaitlyn. Her love knew no bounds, and she dedicated herself to providing them with a nurturing, supportive, and spiritual environment.

Maria was predeceased by her parents Elias & Teodosia Ramos; Ladislao, her dear husband of 45 years; and her siblings Cornelia (Federico) Sacopla, Leonardo (Carmen) Ramos, and Antonia (Reynaldo) Dizon.

Maria Ramos Urrutia was a remarkable woman whose life touched the hearts of everyone she encountered. Born in Makati, Philippines on October 27, 1940, she followed her husband and immigrated to Canada in 1969. With her husband, she helped establish and actively support several Filipino Canadian community groups in Winnipeg and Vancouver during a span of nearly 54 years.  A faithful and active member for over 40 years at Vancouver parishes Corpus Christi and St. Anthony of Padua, she was also a dutiful member of the Catholic Women’s League.

Maria possessed a vibrant spirit that brightened the lives of those around her. Her warm smile and benevolent nature made her a cherished friend and “Ate“ (older/big sister) to so many. She possessed an innate ability to offer comfort, lend a listening ear, and provide valuable advice.  She leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and strength that will forever be cherished.

A vigil service will be held at Corpus Christi Parish, 6350 Nanaimo Street, Vancouver on Sunday, July 16, 2023 at 5:30 pm.  A funeral mass will be celebrated at Corpus Christi Parish on Monday, July 17, 2023, at 1:00 pm.  Interment to follow at Ocean View Burial Park, 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby.

Messages:

Many condolences to all the family and friends who loved you and to whom you shared a kindness! You would gladly open your home to those seeking camaraderie.

I came to know Ate Mary when I was working at Directory Dept at TELUS. We had lunch at the cafeteria together with other Pinoy employees. Last time I saw her was when my husband and I picked her up at Richmond for a get-together with some of our friends. We had lots of laughter and she kept saying to me I should organize another gathering. Ate Mary had a gentle soul full of compassion and generosity for people in need. I will miss our text messages and phone calls to each other. I love you and will miss you my dear friend. I know you’re enjoying heaven right now with the best company ever our Lord Jesus Christ!!

Tita Mary has been a member of the Catholic Women’s League (CWL) at St. Anthony of Padua Parish Council since 2010. Despite her age and ailment, she has been very supportive in all our meetings and events and would always bring us her special kutsinta. Words cannot describe the kind of friendship she gave. She was like my mom, and we would always end our conversations with the exchanges of “I love you’s.” She knew I loved her very much and I know she loved me too. Oh, I will truly miss her. How can I describe Tita Mary? Not only was she a Gorgeous Gentlewoman but she was always Generous, Gregarious, Grateful, Graceful. A Genuine Catholic who lived life on purpose, so Graciously pleasing God. To Karlo, Ken and the rest of the family, my condolences and prayers are with you. Let us rejoice instead of grieve for we have gained another Angel in heaven. Tita Mary, may the good Lord remember you with the sign of faith and may you rest in the sleep of peace! Grant all who sleep in Christ a place of refreshment, light and peace. Amen. — Marica Andrews

Our heart-felt condolences from Winnipeg, May your soul rest in peace together with Ninong Laddy.

Our deepest condolences to Karlo, Ken and their families. Tito Lading and Tita Mary were close friends with my mom and dad Reynold and Letty Reyes. We have fond memories of the Urrutia family over the span of 50 years. My mom is deeply saddened that she won’t be able to talk to Tita Mary anymore but she cherishes the memories and the wonderful friendship that they shared. Rest in peace Tita Mary.. we love you and thank you for being such a wonderful lady that blessed our lives.

Maria was a dedicated sister of St. Anthony of Padua CWL. She was concerned about everyone checking in to make certain you were doing well, offering prayers and encouragement. I will miss her quiet strength and beautiful smile. Pray for us Mary.

Deepest sympathy, that you left us, I didn’t say goodbye the last time I dropped you off June 27th. We managed to say hello at kuya s on his birthday that day. Your hair cut looks really good on you…without knowing that, that would be the time I will see you. I am going to miss our phone calls, my visit to Vancouver to see you and lots of dinner dates. I will miss lots of your requests from me to bring to you from the island. Ate, I love you and may you rest in peace.
