Herman Dorin

DORIN, Herman Hubert

November 3, 1929 – April 7, 2022

On Thursday April 7, 2022, Herman Dorin of Didsbury, Alberta passed away at the age of 92 years.

Herman will be remembered by his loving family, his wife of 67 years Shirley; his three sons, Dieter (Heather), Mark (Cheryl), and Ivan Dorin; his daughter, Karen Wedel; two grandsons, Neil (Phoebe) and Kevin (Amelia) Dorin; and two great grandchildren, Declan and Evie Dorin; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.

Herman was born in Bruce, Alberta to a pioneer family and was proud of it. His parents, William and Olga Dorin, passed away when he was young.  He is the last surviving member of his family of four half brothers and seven brothers and sisters. Herman was also predeceased by his mother-in-law Katherine Campbell.

Herman went to the University of Alberta, obtaining a teaching degree. He taught French and other subjects including carpentry in many Alberta schools including Windfield, Bentley, Eckville, Airdrie, Didsbury, Sangudo and Calgary.  The family moved to Didsbury in 1967 when he was hired as a guidance counsellor. Herman and Shirley bought land in the Town of Didsbury in 1970.  Herman raised cattle and horses for decades. His many career paths also included concrete contractor and land developer.

A comment from Dallas Davis speaks volumes about Herman:

I lived across the street from them when I was just a little guy. Herman taught me how to rope a calf, milk cows, shoot gophers and even how to read and write. I have always looked up to him as a living legend.

Herman was an Alberta champion amateur wrestler and coached wrestling at many schools, the University of Calgary, and Olds College. He was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame as a wrestling pioneer in 2019. “It was love at first fight.”

Details regarding a Memorial Service will be announced at a later date.

Donations in memory of Herman may be made to the Didsbury and District Historical Society at https://www.didsburymuseum.ca/support.html.

I remember handsome Herman and you both as young and in love when we were in Germany after Dieter was born for a holiday with you. Always felt sad I didn't know you guys as an adult. You were a very feelgood couple to me, as a deeply unhappy child. I turned out good though. Thinking of you Shirl. xxxx ~ Victoria Rousseau(Steffi's daughter Veronica)
