Jacob Daniel Baum

December 27th, 2020

Jacob (Jake) Daniel Baum passed away Sunday, December 27, 2020 in long term care in Calgary, AB at the age of 87. Diagnosed with Dementia two years ago, Jake had been suffering from the declines of the disease. He leaves behind his wife, Grace, of 61 years; his son, Doug; daughter, Cyndi; son-in-law, Brent; grandsons, Austin and Mason; brothers and sisters-in-law; Winnie (Nick) Slootweg, Maria (David) Stretch, Wayne (Alvina) Peddie; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Jake was pre-deceased by his parents, Jacob and Natalia Baum; and sister, Lenora Peddie.

Born in Medicine Hat, AB, Jake spent his youth in Maple Creek, SK where he enjoyed playing hockey and graduated high school. He moved to Medicine Hat in 1956 and met Grace two years later.

Jake had a lifelong career with Western Cooperative Fertilizer, obtaining his second-class steam engineer ticket. Relocating to Calgary in 1965, Jake’s passion for his family stood out in ensuring that they were well looked after.

A true do-it-yourselfer, he was meticulous in the house projects he built, the cars he maintained and the lawn that was the envy of the neighborhood. He took great pride in all that he did.

Family camping vacations on a lake or at the ocean were fond memories with their young family.

Jake’s fondness for golf often saw him on the links at Maple Ridge Golf Club and, in retirement, golfing and volunteering as course marshal at D’Arcy Ranch Golf Club in Okotoks, AB.

He also loved to curl and was a long-time member of three Calgary men’s curling leagues.

Through these sporting activities, work and the congregation at McDougall United Church, Jake made many, many long-time friends. He will be sorely missed by all of us left behind.

The family wishes to thank the compassionate staff at Bethany Riverview in Calgary for their great kindness in taking such great care of Jake during his residence.

A Memorial Service will be held for Jake at McDougall United Church on Monday, January 4, 2021 at 1:00 PM following COVID restrictions and will be livestreamed @ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_7mplguk2NAKiZ0zRl8iMg/video

If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made in Jake’s name to the Bethany Care Foundation - Bethany Riverview https://bethany7754.thankyou4caring.org/donate or telephone Toll Free

Messages:

I just want to thank all of you for offering your love, friendship, prayers, cards, flowers...but most of all, for your stories - for your words. It means so much to us all that you have taken the time to write to us, to watch Dad's service and to make it known that you are out there, supporting us in our grief. Thank you and Love to you all. Cyndi :)

Dear Grace, So sorry for your lost of Jake, We had many good times both of you at Eleanor & Rays. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you. Hope to see you this summer. GAIL & Bill

Dear Grace and family: We have just viewed the special Memorial Service for Jake and we "stood beside you." We share many happy gatherings with you and Jake at the Calgary Maple Creek Reunions and the Didsbury golf tourneys - attended by so many Maple Creekites (some from as far as Denver, Colorado, Edmonton, AB. and B.C.) to reconnect and reminisce. This along with our many years of friendship. Just as the sea's unceasing waves will always reach the shore, we shall remember Jake with great affection for his gentle, caring and helpful personality. With love, hugs and our deepest sympathy , , , Tom and Helen

To Jake's family: My sincere condolences, I am so sorry for your loss. My first remembrances of Jake were when he came to Medicine Hat to play hockey with the local team. He lived with us for awhile, always cheerful. And later, the few times I visited with Jake and Grace, they were always welcoming and gracious. Jake had a special warmth and a kind and generous spirit.

Dear Grace, Our sincere condolences to you and your family. Our thoughts are with you. Ruth, Lahcen, Raúl, Domenique and Nouria.

Hi to the wife and daughter of Jake and family, I could not forget how you love your dad by being in the floor cutting his toe nails. Sending all those goodies. Bless your Heart. There’s season in our life, our family members change in their physical and mental status but I saw you there, You did not give up on him, even though it’s so hard, you still come and show to us the academy of aging staff that you still care and we are not alone to take care of your dad. May the Peace of God be with you that surpasses all .understanding.

Grace, Cyndi, Brent, Austin and Mason, we are thinking of you and sending you love and prayers.

Jake was more like a brother than a cousin to me. He was a most caring and responsible person. He will always be in our hearts.

Dear Grace, so sorry to hear of Jake’s passing. We both are remembering you in our prayers and know Jake is no longer suffering. Love Doug And Isobel

Jake is remembered by the children of Richard Doe. Jake and my father went to school together in Maple Creek, along with my father's sister, Mary Ellen Gilchrist (nee Doe). Both Jake and my father ended up in Calgary and maintained their friendship until my father's early death in 1992. Due to my father's illness, emphysema, he relied on his many friends to keep him active and social and Jake was one of those friends that came to his aid during this time of his life. Jake was such an excellent person and friend to his Maple Creek crew that even after our father's death, he maintained occasional contact with us, especially through my sister Kirsten, until his health started to decline.

Grace, We are thinking of you and your family as you go through this sad, difficult time. Cherish the many memories you have of Jake.....I know we in the neighborhood will as well. Sincere thoughts with our sympathy, Stan & Darlene Miller

Dear Grace and family, Our heartfelt condolences on the passing of Jake.We remember Jake as a soft-spoken, friendly gentleman. May God comfort and sustain you in the difficult days ahead. We hope to be able to follow the Memorial Service. Thinking of you. Sincerely: Joe & Arda.

My family and I have lived across the street from Jake and his wife Grace for the last 12 years. I remember well seeing him working on his lawn and garden. At least a couple of times he came over to give assistance while I was working on my home and yard. He is sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers with Grace and the rest of Jake's family. The Prosser's.

Dear Grace, So sorry we have lost our good friend Jake, and it seems like a short few years ago that we were together at the FLC Seniors' banquet after which you generously offered me a ride home. After service Sundays were always so nice with you both, and the Men's club provided a little time every month or two to get to know one another and update current happenings. Dear Wayne, I was not aware of your brotherhood with Jake, and feel your pain and loss. He will always be with you in spirit, with great memories only you both would have. Sincere condolences to all of the family, Drew Agnew
