It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Janet Marion Joy, our loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
She was born in Fort William Ontario as the oldest of three children of Ernie and Carrie Lumley. They moved to White Rock BC in the early 1950’s where she attended Star of the Sea Catholic Church and went to Semiahmoo High School. After her first job at the Bank of Montreal, she joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at Senneterre Quebec at the age of 19. It was there she met her husband, Douglas Joy. Shortly after, they settled in Hamilton Ontario and went on to have four children: Lawrence, Raymond, Linda, and Carmel. They moved back to White Rock in 1968, where Doug ran an automotive business in New Westminster while Janet worked as the bookkeeper.
Janet spent her life devoted to the Catholic church, serving as President and Treasurer of the Catholic Women’s League, Coordinator for Religious Education, Bible Study Leader, and for 33 years, the Librarian at the Good Shepherd Church. She also served as an in-charge for the John Paul II pope’s visit to Vancouver in 1984.
Janet was soft spoken, well read, and very knowledgeable about all things religious. She cared deeply about everyone, spending countless days helping all of us. Janet was never dominating and had a special laugh we will always remember. She was a fantastic cook, sharing food made with love. Comforting us when we were sick, gentle, and understanding during difficult times, Janet had a profound sense of peace, was well loved by everyone, and will be dearly missed.
Predeceased by her husband Douglas Joy. Survived by sister Nancy Crichton, brother Ted Lumley, children Lawrence Joy (Chris), Raymond Joy (Amalia), Linda Johnston (Doug), Carmel Joy-Schlase (Bob), 13 Grandchildren, 9 Great Grandchildren and extended family.
A funeral mass will be held on
Friday October 6th
Good Shepherd Church 2250 150 St, Surrey, BC
In lieu of flowers, she has requested donations to South Fraser Pregnancy Options.
Janet was a very kind and caring person, a great cook, intelligent with a lovely sense of humor. For a few years of my life she was like a second Mom to me. Her passing inspired me to finish a new song about our parents generation transitioning toward the next life, which I performed in her honor the weekend of her funeral service... to be recorded next summer. Condolences and Best Wishes to all of The Family. xo David
MY MOTHER WAS A SAVOIR, A SPECIAL FRIEND AS WELL. SHE WAS SOMEONE YOU COULD EASILY TALK TO, SOMEONE YOU COULD TELL. SHE ALWAYS LISTENED TO YOUR PROBLEMS AND SHE WAS ALWAYS AROUND. SHE SEEM TO SMOOTH YOU WITH HER SMILE, THROUGH OUR UPS AND DOWNS MY MOTHER" LOVED THE CATHOLIC CHURCH & WAS BLESSED BY OUR LORD. SHE LIVED HER LIFE TO THE FULLEST AND I NEVER SAW HER BORED. OUR FAMILY WAS TRULY BLESSED TO BE RAISED BY HER, FOR SO MANY YEARS. HOWEVER, HER UNEXPECTED PASSING HAS BROUGHT MUCH SORROW AND MANY TEARS. SHE WAS BLESSED WITH AMAZING PARENTS, SIBLINGS, CHILDREN AND GREAT GRANDCHILDREN. SHE WAS ALSO BLESSED BY HAVING SO MANY FRIENDS & FAMILY, AND RELATIVES ATTENDING WE SHARED MANY OF THE SAME POLITICAL VIEWS, CONVERSATIONS THAT I WILL MISS EVERY DAY. SHE HAD THE ABILITY TO CALMLY DEFEND WHAT SHE BELIEVED, IN HER SPECIAL WAY. SHE PRAYED FOR THOSE WHO PASSED RECENTLY, WITHOUT SERVICES, WHO WEREN’T SO FORTUNATE. I CAN'T EVER REMEMBER A TIME, WHERE SHE WAS ANGRY, UNREASONABLE OR INORDINATE. MOM HAD A GREAT MIND TO PLAY CARD GAMES, LIKE CRIBBAGE, SCRABBLE AND CANASTA. BUT EVERYONE KNOWS, SHE WAS BETTER KNOWN FOR MAKING GREAT PASTA. JANET BROUGHT REAL "JOY" TO OUR LIFE'S AND WE WERE FORTUNATE TO LIVE BY THE SAND. MY MOTHER MAY HAVE LEFT US, BUT SHE WENT TO GOD, BLESSED WITH A WINNING HAND!
Dear Linda, Your mom is so lovely. It is not easy when our mom's have to leave us. They are so wonderful and always hold that special place in our hearts. You will always have your memories of her and the great times and traditions you shared together. Sending blessings and love, Bisa and Frank

My sincere sympathy to the family. . Janet was a special person
I was pleased to have had the opportunity to meet Janet twice over the past year and a half when Carolyn and I visited the family in White Rock. I found her to be soft spoken, thoughtful and pleasant to be with. She was a Lovely Lady and a great loss.
Our deepest condolences for the loss of your beloved mom. Wishing you and all your family to be surrounded by peace at this very difficult time.
We're so sad to hear of the passing of Janet. Our visits with her were too few. We will think of her at future family visits with Larry, Linda, and extended family. Keith and Deb Pinchin
