Leslie Elliott Sherman

April 21st, 2023

Leslie Elliott Sherman of Regina passed away on Friday, April 21st, 2023.  A private ceremony will take place at a later date. To leave online condolences please visit the Alternatives Funeral & Cremation website, www.MyAlternatives.ca/Regina

Les is lovingly remembered by his wife of almost 61 years, Celia, their daughter, Coralie (Paul) Postma, his grandson Brendan (Haley) Postma,  his granddaughter, Victoria Postma (Liam O'Connor),  his great-grandson, Elliot Postma, his sister, Isobel Hart, many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.  Les was predeceased by his parents, Leslie and Nanna Sherman and his sister, Yvonne Smyth.

Les was born on October 16, 1941, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.  His family moved to Regina when he was a child where he lived out the rest of his life. He attended Davin School and Sheldon Williams Collegiate.   Les worked as a draftsman for a while before he was hired to teach drafting at a brand new high school in Regina.  Miller Comprehensive Highschool opened its doors in 1966 and he remained there for the 32 years of his amazing teaching career.  He was truly a master teacher, impacting the lives of countless young adults.  Teaching was definitely what he was meant to do, and he loved it right up until he retired.  His biggest joy, however, was his family.

He met Celia when he was 17 years old and they were a perfect match.  The first time Les took Celia's hand on the way home from a football game her heart melted and that was it. They were married on July 7, 1962, and have been almost inseparable ever since. Their marriage is an example of how to remain happy and in love.   In 1966 they had a baby girl named Coralie.  Their close little family of three was a happy one.  The house was often filled with 50's music, there was a lot of dancing in the kitchen, and there was always laughter. He was the best husband and dad and when he became a grandpa he was amazing at that as well.  Brendan and Victoria were his heart. He was so incredibly proud of both of them and loved them beyond words.  Recently his great-grandson was born and he was so touched that his sweet great-grandson, Elliot, was named after him.  His family meant everything to him and they are all heart-broken to say good-bye to him.

Les was very intelligent,  creative and talented.  As a young adult he took an interest in photography, building a dark room in his basement . He continued to enjoy small construction and home renovation projects throughout his life.  He also enjoyed landscaping and gardening in the many homes he and Celia lived in.  Les was an extremely talented artist, however, he remained very humble about it. He loved animals, and was very knowledgeable about the animal kingdom.  He really enjoyed traveling.  Such wonderful memories were made on the many family vacations taken over the years.  Les was a gentle, quiet, introverted person, however, he also had a bit of a goofy side that not many got to see.  He had an awesome sense of humor and loved to be with family and friends. His happy place was wherever his family was.  Everyone who knew Les liked and respected him.  He will be missed by so many people.  The world is truly a better place for having Leslie Elliott Sherman in it.

Messages:

Mr. Sherman was one of those teachers who left a gentle and indelible impact on a student. I had the great good fortune to have him as my Drafting teacher at Miller in the early 80s. He instilled in me an appreciation for precision, accuracy, and attention to detail which has perpetuated into my career as a Geographer and Geographic Information Systems profession and Instructor. I am ver grateful for his tutelage and hope that I pass on to my students what Mr. Sherman did to me. My sincerest condolences to Mrs. Sherman, who was the Secretary at my elementary school, St. Thomas, and will forever be know thus, and to the rest of their family. Rest in Peace, Mr. Sherman. You did well and made a positive impact. Thank you. May the memory of you be eternal.

Dear Celia and family: my condolences I had the pleasure to work with Les for 20 years at Miller years later we met on coffee row.A very special colleague and friend , a true Marauder.

Dear Coralie, Sending you my deepest condolences. I had read the brief obituary before. This tribute is just absolutely beautiful. I remember him stopping in to see you at RPL in the A/V department. May he rest in peace.

In our short acquaintance, we came to know Les for his accomplishments, and his soft-spoken manner. Condolences to Celia and family. Don and Peggy Mathieson

My deepest condolences to the entire Sherman family. Mr. Sherman was a well respected teacher and I was so impressed with him that I took all classes he taught! Thanks to his excellent teaching abilities and pushing me to do well, I landed a 40+ year career that started in drafting before it became computerized. Thanks Les! May you rest in peace!

We were very sorry to hear about Les. He was a great friend and person. He will certainly be missed. Les and Cheryl Kram

My condolences to Celia and family. Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss, Celia and Coralie. May God send your family peace and courage at this time. His smile will be missed.

Very sorry to hear of the death of Les. Our condolences to Celia, Coralie and family. I got to know Les first as my Gr 9 shop teacher and then later through Celia's work relationship with Pam in the Catholic School system. Les was one of the first teacher's I had that not only was a great teacher but showed respect to his students. Every time we met in later years we would joke about a bird I had made in grade 9 woodworking. It was pretty pathetic and he said he used it as an example of what not to do to future classes! He had a great sense of humor! It was a pleasure to know him! Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Les was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, friend and teacher. Hold on to all the wonderful memories you have and may the love you have for him bring you peace.

Mr. Sherman was my favourite teacher at Miller even though I never took one of his classes. I was involved with the yearbook and he was the teacher supervisor. I learnt so much from him. He was patient and kind. He will be missed by all who know him.

My deepest sympathies to you, his family. I had the privilege of working with Les in the 1990's when Cable Regina 7(Access Communications) did a co-operative project of instructing students to make television programming in studio. Les led that class for four years. He would do the preliminary instruction in his class and then the students came to the studio to learn studio craft, build sets, practice and make studio programs. I was thankful that he was ready to learn all about television production before he taught it to his students. He was easy going but firm when he had to be. It was a joy to work with him and watch how he worked with those students. It was not hard to see that many of them were very fond of him. I am spending time over the next few days reminiscing and Les is on my mind and in my prayers. Again, I am so sorry for your loss. Martin Kondzielewski

We are so sorry to hear of the loss of Les Sherman, always such a great man. He will be so missed by Celia, Coralie, Paul, Brendan and Victoria, who are now in our hearts. We send you much sympathy and many hugs at this time.

What a lovely tribute to your husband and dad. He was obviously, very humbly, a man of many talents. Losing Les will obviously leave a huge hole in your hearts, but my wish for you all is that the many memories and stories you share of your life with him will help bring some comfort as you mourn your loss.

Coralie, Celia and family, I am so very sorry for your loss. Hold your memories close and let them bring you comfort in the coming days.

What a beautiful write up Coralie. Les & Celia were wonderful friends of ours for over 63 years & we will certainly miss him. He was a great kindhearted & caring friend. It is so hard to believe he is gone. Our love to Coralie & family and to Celia.

Les was a gifted teacher and it was at Miller that I got to be friends with him. He was respected as a teacher and as a person. Students often returned to Miller following graduation to say hello to Mr. Sherman. He was one of my favourite people I ever encountered. Pat games will not be the same without Les in the stands. He once shared with me that he had a record player in a 60’s car. Cool! I am grateful that I got to know Les Sherman.
