Anna Kozak Darcovich

February 17th, 1921 ~ June 27th, 2022

“A mother’s love is the heart of the family.“

In her quiet and gentle way, Mom truly was the heart of our family. How blessed we were to have her as our mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend.

What an adventure her life was. Her sister-in-law, Ollie Darcovich so eloquently put it in these words:

From birth and early childhood in Ukraine, to an ocean voyage to Canada, school, new friends, learning a new language, life as a young bride in Spalding, raising a family…

How many tasty meals prepared through the years. How many gardens planted and harvested. How many jars of pickles preserved. How many pails of Saskatoons picked and baked into buns. How many varanyky pinched? Soups prepared? How much butter churned? How many years before electricity, central heating, running water and appliances?

How many cows milked, cream cheques cashed, eggs gathered? How many sheaves of grain stooked, hay pitched, seneca roots dug? How many prairie winters endured and springs welcomed?

How many curling championships won. Softball games played. Flowers enjoyed. Mushrooms picked…in secret spots. Quilts lovingly quilted. Canasta games “duelled”. Trips, adventures, holidays and travels enjoyed.

How many books read? Laughs shared? Friendships cherished?

Her story, her life, amazing. A life with 3 sisters, Eileen, Eva and Marie, followed by a 51-year marriage to James, began a treasured legacy:

Seven children: Michael, Iris, Sandra, Tim, Morris, Nadine and Susanne. 11 grandchildren: Kerry, David, Elena, Larissa, Alycia, Anthony, Andrew, Sarah, Lauren, James and Matthew. 15 great grandchildren: Madeline, Stephanie, Emily, James, Marta, Katya, Ivan, Anya, Sophia Harrison, Sheridan, Luke, Violet, Greta and Jack. Two daughters-in-law: Trish and Cathryn. Three sons-in-law: Steve, Denny and Bill. Four grandsons-in-law: Graeme, Rob, John and Taras. One grand daughter-in-law Sharon.

Again in Ollie’s words:

“We celebrate and honour all that you are: a selfless hard worker. An amazing cook. The hero mother, grandmother and great grandmother. The welcoming hostess. The dear friend. We celebrate your warm, generous, caring heart and beautiful soul. You brought joy to our family and to those lucky enough to be in your life and to those who only just crossed your path from time to time.”

Messages:

Auntie Anna will be greatly missed, She was truly a wonderful person! I will always cherish the wonderful memories I have of your MOM!!! Her amazing personality lives on through all of you. Our sincerest condolences!! Sending lots of love!

Our Aunt Anna gave so well that fond memories of her are being sent to mercifully soften the ache of her passing.

Belonging...that is the word that describes how I felt in her home and at her table and even in her presence. The farm in Kuroki was a gift she shared with so many. I learned how to ride a bike on that farm, look for kittens ('kitty, kitty, kitty') and appreciate hints of dill and garlic in the food. No beds were softer and no kitchen was more enticing. She worked hard so that we could feel carefree. Now that I have my own home and my own garden, I think of Auntie Anna frequently. Such a model of quiet and gracious love. I am eternally grateful for sunny summer days spent in her hospitable home. Sending Marv's and my condolences to you all on the loss of this special lady.

I always enjoyed visiting Aunt Anna and getting together with cousins Suzanne and Nadine. Aunt Anna always provided me with a warm hug beautiful smile and countless dinners, home made root beer and delicious pickles. I learned the farm life while visiting there. Always enjoying being around the chickens and cows and enjoying her immense garden pickings. Aunt Anna was kind, generous, loving, a fabulous cook, a devoted wife, mother, aunt and sister to my Grandmother Eileen. Her tireless work on the farm never reflected on her enthusiasm of hosting family . She was an aunt I truly loved and appreciated having in my life. I am grateful to have had her as an aunt and she will continue to live on through the memories snd teachings she provided me as a child. Dawn Mohammed (Nakrieko)

Anna you will be forever missed and loved by your Selo family. Your stories, your love, compassion that you shared over the years will never be forgotten. You brought joy and laughter. There is not a person here that will ever look at a flower the same way. Your love for a great KFC meal, ice cream, and a good Chinese Dinner (don't forget the shriimp) Thank you for letting us into your world, With love and Admiration Lorelei and the entire Selo Family xo

I met Nadine and Suzanne at Tryzub Church Camp at Crystal Lake, and spent time visiting with Mr and Mrs Darcovich on their farm, as a teenager. As years went by, it was always wonderful visiting her again, when she lived in Calgary with Nadine and Danny. Mrs Darcovich was always charming, loved a good story, and was the perfect hostess. She has passed on those traits to her wonderful children whom she admired! Hugs to the families! Vichnaya Pamyat! Eternal Memories!

Anna was a wonderful woman. I will always have fond memories of how she would watch me crochet at family suppers at Elena and Rob’s. She would always say “I could never do that”. I suspect she could have!!! Rest In Peace Anna.
