Leverne "Bushy" Anthony Lund

April 1st, 2021

Leverne “Bushy” Anthony Lund, husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and uncle passed away suddenly in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on Thursday, April 1, 2021 at the age of 67.

Bushy will be forever remembered by his wife and friend Wendy; his son and light of his life Brett, his daughter-in-law Stephanie and their two children Ryann and Brooks; and his 24/7 four-legged companion Belle.

Leverne will also be fondly remembered by his mother Clara; his brothers Randy, Terry, Greg (Che) and Wade (Leah); his sister Anita (Ian) and their children Dakota, Kristie Bredy and family; aunts Alvina Frosberg and Sophie Peterson; brother-in-law Kim White; sisters-in-law Judy Powroznik, Lynda Barroby (Sunny) and Doreen White; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and dear friends.

He was predeceased by his dad Vernon (Corky); grandparents Anton and Ellen Lund and Cornil and Bertha Ulledalen; in-laws Jack and Harriet White; brothers-in-law Terry White, Danny White, Clay White and Bob Powroznik; and sister-in-law Sandra White.

Leverne was born to Vernon and Clara Lund on March 18, 1954 in Regina, Saskatchewan. He grew up on a farm in Lake Alma, Saskatchewan with his parents and younger siblings. He attended school in Lake Alma and Gladmar, Saskatchewan. When Bushy was 14 years old, he started to sneak away from home on the weekends to go to rodeos and this was the start of his lifelong love of the sport and lifestyle. After graduating in 1972, he followed his dreams to the Foothills west of Nanton, Alberta to fulfill his calling as a cowboy. He later returned to Saskatchewan working, rodeoing, and having fun. In 1976, rodeoing brought him to Maple Creek, Saskatchewan where he met his wife Wendy White and ended up staying for 45 years. He would only briefly leave to run a grazing lease in Porcupine Hills, Alberta and to drywall in Calgary, Alberta and Canmore, Alberta.

Bushy was very versatile, from drywalling, to cement work, to building houses, to doing leather work, to running a ranch and raising cattle. He loved working with cattle and was able to until he passed away. Regardless of what he did, he always put his heart and soul into it.

In his younger days, Bushy was a ball player, so it was only natural that he would help coach when Brett played. He was so very proud to help coach such a great group of kids to two Provincial Championships – one in Pee-Wee and one in Bantam. He also helped coach hockey and was the President of the White Mud Hockey League for one year. This was quite an accomplishment because the only hockey he played was in the first battle of the Little Big Puck in Maple Creek. He also was an Elks member, on the rodeo committee (serving as President), and a Kinsmen member. He served as President of the Kinsmen Club and enjoyed the work and fellowship it entailed. He took pride in the fact that he was able to help design and build BEULAH the cow, which the Maple Creek Kinsmen walked to Regina, Saskatchewan for Kinsmen Telemiracle.

Bushy’s family meant the world to him. Everything he did was for them. He was so proud of Brett, Stephanie, Ryann and Brooks. They made his life complete. He loved his family, friends, hard work and of course a drink (or two) of whiskey and water. There was never anything else that he felt he ever needed.

He will forever be loved and dearly missed, as he embarks on his new journey.

“Yippie Ki Yah my love, let’r buck!”

Memorial donations in Leverne’s (Bushy) memory may be made to Kinsmen Telemiracle (www.telemiracle.com) or to the Maple Creek Rodeo (c/o Showdown in Cowtown, Box 1114, Maple Creek, SK S0N 1N0)

Due to Covid-19 restrictions a gathering will be held at a later date.

Messages:

Have been thinking daily of Maple Creek folk and how unique that part of this great country is, was and always will be since hearing of Bushy’s leave taking. Your family Wendy know it exceptionally well both from your White, Barnstable, Thorson side of your families but from an even deeper Lund appreciation of what makes Maple Creek a place to call home. I have long envied my MC relatives and am saddened by you losing Bushy so soon from a marvellous life that you created for him. As you know I did not know Laverne but I want you to know that I envied what his ranch/rodeo life meant to your family. Wishing you good memories and sunny days up the trail for all your family and friends. Luv ya.

Wendy and Family - We were so saddened to hear of the loss of Bushy. He was quite a guy and had such great wit. As Aaron said not many of his old rodeo traveling partners left. He will be truly missed. Our deepest condolences.

Sorry to hear about your loss, I grew up with the Lund family, stayed on their family farm growing up as a kid, was a great experience in my life

To the entire Lund family and extended family, please accept my sincere condolences for Laverne's passing. Although it has been over 50 years since I last saw Laverne and the whole family, many of my fondest memories were all those summers my mother, sister and I spent on the Lund ranches. We would stay with Anton and Ellen, but would spend days and weeks at Vern and Clara's place where I learned the value of hard work as we baled and stacked hay by hand the old fashion way. Laverne was just starting his rodeo days back then, so I was able to shirt tail along on the bull barrel, thinking about but never actually getting on the bull in the pen, and of course living on horses and driving old trucks around the farm. My wife and I had hoped to make our way through Saskatchewan this year or next to re-acquaint with everyone and tell embellished stories from the 60s. I am sorry we didn't make it in time to see Laverne. May you all be comforted by those great memories and stories of Laverne.

Thinking about you everyday Wendy, Brett and family. Met Vern, as we called him, in 1973 when he was working on the Spruce Ranch by ChainLakes west of my family home west of Nanton. The next Summer he was our Bestman and Special Friend ever since! Lots of crazy memories to cherish forever! Lv & Hugs
