Matthias Leo Silbernagel

Matthias “Leo” Silbernagel passed away peacefully in Long Term Care Unit 1 in Didsbury, Alberta on February 4, 2012 at the age of 89.  Leo was born June 27, 1922 in Beiseker, Alberta.  Leo will be lovingly remembered by his children Peter (Evelyn), Jerry and Dale Silbernagel, his four grandchildren Laura (Fraser) Quelch, Charles Silbernagel, Courtney (Curt) Shields and Tammy Silbernagel and four great-grandchildren Tristen & Robin Quelch and Clara & Cain Shields.  Leo is also survived by his siblings Eva Heffner and Leo Silbernagel, sisters- and brothers-in-law Pat Silbernagel, Margaret (Morley) Grose, Jean Williams, Bernice Nelson and Fern (Glenn) Skocdopole, and many nieces and nephews.

Leo was predeceased by wife Betty Silbernagel, parents Peter & Elizabeth Silbernagel, siblings William (Florence) Silbernagel, Annie Thompson, Rose Jensen, Edward Silbernagel, and Joseph (Julie) Silbernagel.

Leo served in World War II with the Canadian Scottish Regiment Third Division and was cited for Bravery Beyond the Call of Duty. Upon return, he trained as a diesel mechanic and met his future wife Betty Thorkman.  Leo worked for Gulf Oil 37 years.  After his retirement he and Betty travelled and joined the Bowness Seniors’ Club, where he was an active member.

Leo was a kind and gentle man who cared deeply for his family and friends.  He was hardworking and always willing to lend a helping hand.  He enjoyed gardening, helping family on the farm, softball, bowling, and hockey.  Honest and loyal, Leo was a man to look up to.  We’re going to miss you.

A Celebration of Leo’s Life will be held  at the Five-O Club, 2500 – 15 Avenue, Didsbury, Alberta on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 11:00AM. 

Memorial donations in Leo’s name may be made directly to S.T.A.R.S., Box 570, 1441 Aviation Park NE, Calgary, Alberta  T2E 8M7.

I wish to express my condolences to your family for the loss of Leo. He and I worked together for years at Gulf Oil. Leo was a good friend, and I will miss him.
