Wolfgang Hermann Wenzel
February 10, 2012

It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of
Wolfgang Wenzel on Friday, Febuary 10, 2012. He will be lovingly remembered by
his wife Brigitte; children Koko (Rob), Markus (Charlene) and Kara;
grandchildren Lukas, Liam, Logan, Kristof, Max and Mati.
Wolfgang’s residential
design achievements over the last fifty years have enriched the lives of many.
Energy efficiency and sustainability increasingly motivated the direction of
his work. His passions included sailing, traveling, chess, ping pong and

Messages of Condolence
Please accept my condolences on your loss. I'm not a personal friend but many years ago Wolfgang designed plans for my house which was built out in the Bragg Creek Area ... with suggestions he designed a passive solar home ahead of its time, and while I no longer live in the house I make a point of driving by when visiting Bragg Creek. To this day I still have the plans in my possession as they hard to part with. ~ Gillian Holmes
It is with very great sadness we read of Wolfgang's passing. He built our amazing home in Springbank. He was the most intelligent, trusting, creative person. Wolfgang had a reputation for honesty and integrity. There was no one who did not have the utmost respect for him. Please accept our deepest sympathies. All the amazing homes and buildings he designed and built are monuments to a great builder and a great human being. ~ Barrie and Julie Orr
Dad, A huge thanks for showing me the way in the world. Your laughter and creativity will stay with me always, and I will treasure so dearly the time we had together. I would have loved another couple of decades with you around to consult about cars, about houses, and to travel with. The world is a better place because of you, and you have made a difference. ~ Markus Wenzel
We will attend the Celebration of the life of Wolfgang Wenzel in Spruce Meadows at 5 P.M. on Feb. 21, 2012. But, unfortunately, we have another commitment the same day and will stay only for one hour. We appreciate your understanding. Manfred and Marianne Jost ~ Manfred & Marianne Jost
We are so sorry to hear the sad news of Wolfgang's passing. We had the privilege of working with Wolfgang to construct a number of custom homes in the Calgary area that he designed with Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) technology. We appreciated his vision to support energy efficiency & sustainable construction and are grateful for the opportunity to have met his high standards. It is wonderful that his legacy will live on through his innovative designs. His family can be very proud of his achievements. ~ Mark & Dawna Bornais
Brigitte, words fail me. I was so shocked and saddened by this news. I just can't believe that I'll never talk to Wolfgang again. He was a wonderful man and architect that Shawn and I felt very connected to. We will miss him and his creativity immensely. If there is anything we can help you with during this difficult time, or anytime, let us know. You and Wolfgang are dear friends. ~ Sondra Abbott
We were so sorry to learn of Wolfgang's death this week. We greatly benefited from Wolfgang's design talents when we renovated and added to our home twenty years ago. It was a pleasure to have known him. We send sincere condolences to Brigitte and the family. ~ Jim & Doris Garner
So sorry for the loss. Condolences go out to the entire family at the loss of a great neighbor. I was always fascinated that Wolfgang figured out, that Kara's toy telephone could turn the TV on and off... A fond memory of someone intuitively inquisitive. ~ Peter Russell
Brigitte: Roger and I are so sorry to hear about Wolfgang. What a shock for you and your family. I spoke at length to Jo this morning and she told me what a wonderful holiday you and Wolfgang had just had. A great memory for you. We remember fondly the family gatherings in Calgary. It hardly seems possible that we now all are grandparents! How long ago were Hertha, Joe and I on the farm in Olds and you were 'dating' Wolfgang?! Good thing none of us show our age!!! We're thinking of you and we'll raise a glass or two to Wolfgang tomorrow evening. ~ Ingrid and Roger Letham
We were saddened to learn of your loss. Wolfgang designed and provided significant help in the construction of our home 25 years ago. He was visionary and creative. To this day, our home garners compliments and questions. Everyone who sees the home and understands Wolfgang's thinking are impressed by how ahead of its time our home is, thanks in no small part to Wolfgang's wisdom and vision. We wish you and your family our warmest wishes. Our lives are better for Wolfgang's life and genius. Dale and Cathy Ens ~ Dale Ens
Wolfgang designed our first house in Bearspaw (1963), another in Calgary and one in Sidney; all of them were gorgerous and fit our every need. We loved working with Wolfgang because he was practical, had great ideas and was lots of fun. He will be sorely missed. Merritt and Bennie Chisholm, Sidney, B.C. ~ Bennie Chisholm
Dear Brigitte and Family, Our deepest condolences at your loss. The stars are a little brighter now. May the support of friends and family help you through these difficult times. Thinking of you, Heidi, Klaus and Colette ~ Heidi, Klaus, Colette Hubner

Dad, it's been two years and I still miss you! Hope you are having fun in heaven! Thanks for keeping an eye on mom! Love, your eldest, Minga ~ Koko Saar
47 years ago, in 1977 Wolfgang designed and built our bermed home in Killarney, designed to conserve energy. We have been so pleased to have lived here for 47 years and have changed absolutely nothing because it was so perfect Five years ago, 2019 it was granted a City of Calgary Heritage Designation , and this year in 2024 the Province of Alberta has given it a Heritage Designation. We know that Wolfgang would be pleased to know the house will never be torn down and will always be known as a part of Alberta’s history. ~ Joey Stewart
