WENTZELL, Bernard

Wentzell, Bernard Keith, 82, passed away at home surrounded by his family on Sunday, August 20, 2017 in Calgary, Alberta. Bernie was born on December 14th, 1934 to Moyle and Clara (Levy) Wentzell in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia.

At seventeen, Bernie began working for CN Rail and he always looked back on those seven years and the sound of the train whistle with fondness. In 1963, he became the Branch Manager of Powrmatic Ltd. in Halifax, a job he dearly loved. During those 33 years at Powrmatic, he and his wife Winnie travelled the world on numerous company trips. Upon retirement, Bernie discovered his love for bridge with his friends at the Halifax Bridge Club. Then in 2012, he joined his daughter’s family in Calgary, AB. A beloved father and grandfather, Bernie will be sorely missed.

Survived by his daughter Lisa Wentzell-Perry and her husband Brad Perry, grandchildren Brennan and Aislinn (Perry), brother Darren (Kingston, NS) and sister Marilyn (Calgary, AB). He was preceded in death by his wife Winnifred (Wood), his parents, and sister (Velma).

A Funeral Service will be held at St. Francis by the Lakes Church, 192 First Lake Drive, Lower Sackville on Wednesday, September 6th, 2017 at 10:00 am.

The family would like to extend our gratitude to the Calgary Cardiac Function Team for all their support.

Bernie was the most awesome gentleman I have ever seen. During my stay with Lisa's family ( a daughter of Bernie ) for about 10 months in 2014-2015 as an exchange student, it was a real plesure knowing him and staying with him. He was super nice, courteous, open-minded, and respectful in spite of our cultural, generational, linguistic gaps. He was my family, my friend and even my Canadian grandfather. I have so many great memories with him. It was an honor for me to have those kind of memories. I remember the time when I left Canada for getting back to my country, Republic of Korea. We said good bye and he told me we might see each other again in heaven pointing the sky. I said we would see again in Canada in the near future and I gave him bowing ( Korean way of showing respect to someone : wishing someone long and healty life ) with my gratitude. Yes, you were right Bernie. We couldn't see in this life, but you will be missed and will be in my memory. So many emotional stuffs are passing throught my brain now. I will see you in the heaven someday. Untill that time comes, I really wish " May him Rest In Peace " and my condolences are with Lisa, Brad, Brennan, Aislinn.
