Bruno Tymm

On January 7, 2025 Bruno Tymm completed his 87 year life journey which began November 17, 1937 in Skempe, Poland.  Through life experiences, including fleeing war and starting over in new countries, he became resourceful, curious, careful and brave.

Bruno’s book “The Polish Journey” describes his rustic farm life as a child, a perilous wagon escape voyage at age 7, work on Polish farms until age 12, and much more.  As a teen he reunited with his parents and sister Else and settled in Cambs, East Germany.  Eventually the opportunity arose to learn bricklaying in West Germany with his brother Albert, becoming his life’s work.

He moved to Winnipeg, Canada in 1957 and through the youth group at Lutheran Church of the Cross he met Gloria, the newcomer from Australia.  They married in 1964, recently celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary surrounded by family.  In semi-retirement Bruno ran his own bricklaying company then set the lunchbox aside for McDonald’s ‘board meetings’, having coffee with friends Harry and Edwin. 
Bruno’s journey included living in Australia for a time, then settling in Winnipeg, becoming dad to 5 children, and building a house extension to fit everyone.  He earned a high school diploma at age 50, discovered lost relatives in Poland and Chile, researched family history, wrote his book, took videos at family gatherings, enjoyed 8 grandkids, and much more.  He and Nana moved to New Westminster, BC in 2017.

Despite a diagnosis of advanced prostate cancer in 2023, he kept active as chauffeur, church goer, coffee drinker, YouTube viewer, sudoku puzzler, and advice giver, even to his final days in hospice in Burnaby.

Bruno is pre-deceased by siblings Else, Albert, Edward, Hulda and parents Amanda and Heinrich.  Survived by Gloria (nee Hohnberg), Ingrid, Lauren, Mary-Anne, Martin, and Melinda and their families.
