Marie Stroh

Marie Stroh (nee Bergos), beloved sister, aunt, great aunt and friend passed away peacefully in Calgary on October 18, 2013 at the age of 91. Marie’s vibrancy and zest for life was an inspiration for everyone whose lives she touched. Her memory will always be treasured by her sisters, Jeanne of Edmonton and Margaret of Kamloops; her brother, Alex (Dorothy) of Drumheller; sister-in-law, Marjorie of Edmonton and many nieces, nephews and friends. Marie is predeceased by her husband, Michael; sister, Barbara and brothers, Donald and Peter. Marie was born on June 2, 1922 in Calgary and grew up on a farm in the Orkney area with her mother and six siblings. Marie was a CWAC during World War II from 1942 to 1945 followed by a 32 year long career with Zellers including 20 years as Personnel Operations Manager in Calgary. She loved to travel and had a passion for bowling and played on a team that won the Dominion championships in 1964. Special thanks to Corinne, Tweet, Jim, Brent and the many neighbours and friends for their dedication and support. Marie’s spirit will live on with us as we tend our gardens, bowl, visit with friends, and watch sports.

Respecting Marie’s wishes, there will be a short Graveside Service at Queen’s Park Cemetery on Friday, October 25, 2013 at 1:30 pm. Donations in Marie’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 200, 325 Manning Rd. NE, Calgary, AB, T2E 2P5, or the Calgary Zoo, 1300 Zoo Rd. NE, Calgary, AB, T2E 7V6.

Messages of Condolence

Hello, we were the neighbours of Marie for about 7yrs. Recently we move our family to Mexico and remember the day we said good bye to Marie at the end of July. She was still out in her garden tending to the hedges and her flowers. We always loved bringing her a plate of whatever we were having for dinner, as we knew the dish would always be returned with her famous (in our house anyway) butter tarts. Not just once in a while, every time! She absolutely was an inspiration for living life fully every day. She will be missed, but remembered with great fondness. The Goralski Family xo

Marie was our neighbour in Calgary for many years. She was always busy working in her garden and on her yard which was impeccable. Marie always hand a kind word for our family and it was an honour to have known her. She was a neat lady! She will be missed. May you rest in peace Marie. Good journey. Joel G

We called her our Sweet Marie. Always a ready smile, ready to help, she will be dearly missed. She always offered her apples to us, and gave generously of her wonderful garden. We will remember her with great fondness.

My Mom, Connie Ryan (nee Sullivan) worked with "Stroh" at Zellers when she first moved to Alberta from the Maritimes in the early 1950's. They were very good friends and kept in touch for decades. Mom passed away in 2000 and I inherited her address book. One Christmas, after flipping through the pages I saw Marie's name and dropped her a short "Howdy" note and Christmas Card. Since then, every year Marie gave me call on Boxing Day. We would have a lovely chat - about the snow in Calgary, her wonderful neighbors, and my family. I will miss Marie and my annual Christmas call. From the Ryan family to the to the friends and family of Marie Stroh...our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mrs. Stroh, I shall NEVER call her Marie, and my father, Bruce, gave me my first "real" job with Zellers in Forest Lawn. She instilled in all her employees a work ethic and respect for others that is sadly waning in today's world. Mrs. Stroh was a dear friend to both my parents and, after my Dad passed away, continued to be a supportive and wonderful friend to my mom. She will be missed by all of us.

My mom, Agnes Stewart, worked with Marie at Eaton's in the cash office for several years. Mom always enjoyed Marie's company and often brought home stories about their day at work. Marie had a great sense of humour and always brightened my Mom's work day. Mom is temporarily in a physiotherapy rehab centre after a hospital stay and saw Marie's name in the paper.
