STECKLY, David Warren

David Steckly passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 in Didsbury, Alberta at the age of 87 years. David was born June 2, 1930 to Alvin and Lilly Steckly on the family homestead west of Carstairs, Alberta. He attended high school in Didsbury and took over the family farm west of Carstairs. David was an active member of the Mennonite Church his whole adult life.

He will be remembered by his loving wife of 66 years, Hazel (nee Myers) Steckly; children, Lowell (Wendy) Steckly of Salem, Oregon, Ron (Karen) Steckly of Carstairs, Alberta, Ernie (Heather) Steckly of Didsbury, Alberta, Shauna (Kerry) Taylor of Carstairs, Alberta, Joe (Laura) Steckly of Lethbridge, Alberta; 15 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David’s memory to the Mennonite Central Committee (AB Division), #210, 2946 – 32 Street NE, Calgary, AB, T1Y 6J7.

Messages of Condolence

My condolences on the loss of such a warm and kind-hearted man. I was privileged to have spent many happy hours on the farm as a kid with the Steckly clan. I have a great memory of visiting with "Uncle" Dave and "Auntie" Hazel at my mom's memorial service - the genuine caring and concern they expressed equivalent to a big bear hug. He will be missed.

What descriptive words of Dave come to mind when I remember my year as a young man working on the Steckly farm: kind, patient, warm, good teacher of farming skills, thoughtful, stable father & husband, generous member of his community. These words are descriptive for him throughout his life.

Dear Hazel Elwin and I want to express our deepest sympathies. Dave was such a positive, friendly person. Elwin enjoyed having you both as part of his Bible studies and we enjoyed your wonderful hospitality. When I started teaching at Hugh Sutherland School, other staff wondered how I came to be there. When I said that my Uncle Mearl was a cousin of Dave Steckly's, I immediately "belonged". So Dave helped me fit into a new job. Our prayers will be with you and your family. Linda and Elwin Garland

Although there is real sadness as I read Dave's obit, there wells up within me thanks to you and God for a very special friend. Although Salem has been years, Dave's friendship continues to stand out as one of my best friends in life. Thanks you and God's comfort, strength and blessings.
