SMITH, Catherine

Catherine E Smith (nee Woikin of Saskatoon, SK) passed peacefully with her husband, Doug by her side on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at Sarcee Carewest hospice at the age of 63 years. Cathy truly made the most of each day she was given. This was so evident throughout her life with family, ESL students and especially her garden. She embodied grace and peace even through the toughest times and created everlasting memories for her loved ones. She left this world with such grace, and will forever be remembered for the legacy she leaves behind. It will shine through all of those she has touched in her life. We know Cathy has a special place in heaven and will be with us each and every day.

A Celebration of Cathy’s Life will be held at St. James Anglican Church, 6351 Ranchview Drive N.W., Calgary, AB on Thursday, September 4, 2014 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes in Cathy’s name may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, #200, 325 Manning Road NE, Calgary, AB, T2E 2P5 (www.cancer.ca).

Messages of Condolence

I met Cathy several years ago when we were partnered to greet BSF ladies at the church door. As we visited, her love of her family, friends, and the study of the Bible was evident in our conversations. I loved her gentle and joyful spirit as she would share in the early Saturday morning meetings. When she became ill, she showed such trust in The Lord and she knew that he would take care of her and her family. As I prayed for her this past year I will continue to pray for you, her family, that The Lord will bless you all and comfort you.

It was my privilege to work with Cathy in CESLM's training events. She was a hugely popular and extremely high energy presenter; students loved her! I admired her greatly. I saw her as a consumate teacher but I always felt she was also a pastor at heart. She truly cared about people and not in a superficial way. I am overwhelmed with emotions at this untimely loss. Having worked with Cathy at Chinook Learning Services, I have very fond memories of our times together. I shall always remember her as not only a very good teacher but more importantly, an exceptional human being. Her vibrant personality lit up the staffroom each time she walked in. Her cheerful demeanor could cheer us all on a bad day. She was an excellent co-worker, and I feel honored that I had the opportunity to work with her. The physical body may have departed, but her good will and good deeds shall always have an impact on all those who were associated with her in any way. RIP dear friend. You will be always missed!

I give thanks to our Lord for Cathy’s life. I am privileged to have served with her in the past at BSF, and summers in VBS at St. James. Her joy, peace and love of others through service has always been inspiring. She is an encouragement to so many, including me and my young daughter for whom Cathy was a VBS leader. Cathy is indeed an instrument of God’s love that passes through the generations. She is and will be remembered, with love.

I'm so saddened to hear of the loss of a dear co-worker. I worked with Cathy for years at Chinook Learning Services. Her enthusiasm, warmth and caring will be missed by both staff and students. She was a special addition to our staff. I'll never forget her generosity in sharing her baking with us - I use one of her recipes regularly and will be reminded of her every time I eat her rhubarb muffins.

I so enjoyed getting to know Cathy on our noon hour walks at Tuxedo. She was so dedicated to her family and loved teaching her students. What a proud Grandma she was! She loved her Lord and served Him well and now will rejoice with Him forever.
