The bells on the clock that Don built, chimed midnight, March 11, 2020. Soon after, our beloved Donald Andrew Slater (93 years) passed on peacefully. Perhaps, being born and raised on a farm, outside of Regina, the youngest of five siblings is what made Don such a hard-working, industrious man. He learned to persevere through life’s challenges with strength, determination and goals. From his teenage years, into adulthood, Don enjoyed playing drums in a band. He liked the Big-Band sound. Don also worked in a florist shop and it was there that love blossomed. He met Jacquelene Russell (Slater) who became his cherished wife of over 72 years! Their two children, Laura Lee (David Smith) and Douglas (Laurel Sturdy), four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren were the joy of their lives. Don delighted in golfing, cooking and gardening. With diligence, he perfected a weed-less yard. Hot tub parties were always fun too; as were family holidays on his houseboats. Don won several trips with various companies as top salesman. He thrived on helping people save for retirement. Honesty, integrity, kindness and a teasing humour were beautiful qualities that he so readily reflected. He was the quiet, strong pillar that held his family up.
The family is grateful to the F.H.H. staff, Unit 32 and Dr. Mayhew for their wonderful care and comfort.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation in memory of Don may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
A small family gathering will be held to celebrate Don’s Life.
