Douglas "Doug" Alexander Sherris

Being a family-tree expert, Doug always said I was his second cousin, once removed! Having said that, Doug was more like an uncle to me, always quick with his wit, and ready with some wisdom and advice to impart, always helpful and never judging. My husband Al and I spent many visits with him in Didsbury and at our home, or weekly phone calls when we couldn't get together, talking about family, our shared love of good food and wine, travel adventures and the ins and outs of our lives. We will miss him terribly. Our deepest condolences to his brother Mel and many nieces and nephews.

Once i went through Dhs unka Doug was a substitute teacher he had a very kind heart and always took time for all the students there. I was fortunate enough to know him outside of school as well , very good family friend and thats why i called him unka doug. He was very supportive when i was going through finding my biological family. The two things i remember most is the jackalope had in his house and how convince me they are real. Also when found out we are actually related both shared much laughter. Doug always took time to check in with me when wed see each other in town. i will miss unka doug very much.

It is with great sadness that we learned of Doug's passing. Doug will always be remembered for his close connection with our family and for organizing a great "Sherris" Family Reunion that brought so many relatives closer together. We will miss that smile that everyone remembers and comments that usually followed. We will truly miss his chats about the family history and stories that sometimes shouldn't have being told. His stories of travel we so looked forward to hearing.....especially the overseas to Scotland to learn more about our heritage. He truly was the center of the families where we could always here about what everyone was up to or what was happening. Our own roaming reporter so to speak. He was Uncle Dougie to so many people, my family included. He was my high school chemistry teacher for several years and instrumental in me graduating with my peers, with the stern but gentle encouragement he gave me "I don't want to see you back here next year". Not only did I graduate but found out years later that Uncle Dougie was in fact related to us, through the large family tree from which we are leaves. I'll miss his chuckle and smile, great stories and his love of life and all the experiences along the way. He touched many lives in his time, and will always be fondly remembered. Our grad class gave him a toothless plastic comb, teasing him about his ever present brush cut. He loved it.

We received the word of Doug's passing and were sad to hear the news. We had a visit with him at the Hospital on Easter Sunday when we were out in AB. He was cheerful and said they were taking good care of him. He had some updates of the family history to tell us. It was so nice to see him and we recall many visits over the past years and are so thankful we had the chance to meet him and so many family members at the Sherris Reunion. Without him it would not have happened. May you travel well on this final journey and know you were loved and are missed.

Uncle Doug was my dad's brother. My brother Logan's son was named after him. We call him Dougy vs Unca D.. Well, Unca D. yet another loss in the family. We never know when its our time, do we. Little did we know, you were next. I wish I could have said good-bye... I wish I wish I wish... There are no words to express my gratitude for you and all that you did and represented in my world growing up and as an adult. You were our rock, our pillar... There were 10 of us that you were like a second father to. Your nieces and nephews. You were interwoven with all our family affairs, like a thread that was laced throughout, intertwined and connected at all times. The loss... well, there are no words for that either. Farewell my uncle. You were a good man and good person with a great heart and wonderful sense of humor, and a giggle that will never be forgotten. I feel blessed to be able to call you my uncle. Who will be our historian now and do the job as well as you? Me? I take on the ancestry legacy with honor, but I have big boots to fill. This I know. I miss you and love you. May the sun be resting on your face while you joke and giggle with my dad and mom and Ro. Please give grandma, and all, big kisses and hugs for me. I hope you arrived safely to wherever you are. Until we meet again.
