It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Martin Gosse Sheppard who passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday, January 17, 2022 after a courageous 4 year battle with cancer.

Martin is lovingly remembered by his beloved wife of 47 years Beverley (Gough); his daughter, Jennifer (Mark); and son, Steven (Suzanne); his grandchildren, Quinn and Heath; nephew, Mark Watson (Teresa); and their daughter, Kay; sister-in-law, Stephanie Watson and brother-in-law, Joseph Watson;as well as cousins, friends and past co-workers in Calgary and St. John’s.

Born and raised in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Martin was a loving husband, father and grandfather who loved to travel and explore the world. A geologist by trade, Martin worked for many years with the Newfoundland provincial government at the Department of Mines and Energy with a major focus on offshore oil projects. Before retirement, Martin was an instructor at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. He was passionate about his work and was proud to pass along his knowledge to the younger generations. More than anything, Martin enjoyed being with his family and many dear friends. He will always hold a special place in our hearts.
Our heartfelt thanks to all of the doctors, nurses, and staff of the cancer centre at the Calgary Foothills Medical Centre. Many special thanks to Dr. Jamani and Dr. Chaudry and the amazing staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and the staff at Unit 57.

I worked with Martin at the NL Petroleum Directorate at the start of significant oil discoveries. Martin was well respected and liked. I remember Martin and a few of us would sometimes play this pub hockey game downtown on our lunch break. It was a serious time and a fun time. Beverley, I worked with Martin when you were first in Calgary at Chevron. I have fond memories of Martin and I during those short years. He had such a unique sense of humour. I could never beat him at a game of gin rummy! May you enjoy all memories as I will. Bill

I wish to express my sincere condolences to Beverly, and to Jennifer and Steven, and all his loved ones,on Martin’s death. I had the honor of working with Martin in the Newfoundland Government in the 1970’s when he was a key member of a small team devoted to defending Newfoundland’s offshore oil interests. In addition to pioneering geological work in the offshore area which anticipated many of the concepts that continue to be of interest to explorers, Martin was geological adviser on the team that wrestled with Ottawa on one side and major oil companies on the other. I shall always remember how proud and encouraged we were when, very early in the process, Martin decided to return from Calgary to join our team. This work led to the Atlantic Accord which has brought significant benefits to Newfoundland and Labrador and Martin is to be thanked for his service. Beverley and family. Sad to here of Martins passing. Almost 40 years ago Martin hired me from Calgary and enabled us to move back home and have a good career and life. The "Chief', as we called him, was a good leader to us when often times were tough but we made it through and along the way enjoyed a few fishing trips and occasional outings of bowling and pub games. Many fond memories.
