We do not mourn as those who have no hope…..
Yet, we are sad to say Auf Wiedersehen to our Hanni, Hans, Dad, Onkel Hans and Opa.
Born in Berlin, Germany on October 30, 1929, Hans, his siblings and friends and all children of that era and place grew up in difficult times. He found his love in Fraulein Fritzi and with the help and company of family, his own little family immigrated to Calgary in 1958.
Hans and Fritzi raised four children and together they had many adventures exploring the beautiful Rocky Mountains and beyond. He was a Mercedes man but once in a while he would concede that the Americans made nice luxury cars. Whether sharing the beautiful meals Fritzi prepared or playing the dice game “Macke” or spending hours talking about the joys and mysteries of life; Gemutlichkeit was the rule of the house. Hans and Fritzi spend many lovely hours with children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces, infusing a little Berliner Luft to lighten and brighten the mood. Always with pen ready, he would start a round of 20 questions or take your precise order at the restaurant. Life with Hans was not ordinary, even those who met him only once never forgot him!
The later years of life were spent in loving community in Lacombe, Alberta with their youngest daughter Simone and her husband Dean and their children Jesse and Annalise. Sharing life was a joy for all four of them and Opa will be especially missed in the little house on the prairies.
Lord Jesus was Hans’ constant companion, when life was difficult and hard to understand, Hans prayed and prayed deeply. Sharing life’s burdens together with Fritzi and the Lord, the cares of every member of their family and friends were brought to the throne room of God every day.
Left here on earth to figure out how to live without him is his beautiful wife of almost 65 years, Fritzi; their children, Sabine (Jim), Michael (Nikki), Stephan (Cherie), Simone (Dean). Stephan’s wife Cherie has recently passed, succumbing to MS. Hans and Fritzi’s grandchildren in order of appearance, Tobias (deceased), Veronica, Katherine, Jonathan, Gregory, Michael, Mason, Jesse, Annalise and Breanna; great-grand and great-great-grandchildren have met and known their Opa and this has been a blessing for both. His sister, Ilse, has survived the passing of her oldest brother, Alfred, and her youngest brother, Rudy, who died at 5 during the war of diphtheria. Hans’ parents, Alfred and Frieda immigrated to Canada in the early 70’s to be with their children and are buried in Queen’s Park Cemetery in Calgary, Alberta. Many relatives and friends in Canada and Germany mourn Hans’ passing.
On Friday, October 16, 2020 interment will be at Fairview Cemetery, 4430 Woodland Drive, Lacombe, AB at 11:00 am for the family. A Memorial Service will follow at 1:00 pm at the Lacombe Evangelical Free Church at 4619 C and E Trail, Lacombe. Seating provided COVID 19 compliant and case tracing will be required upon entry to the church.
May God be given the glory for all things in our lives….
