Richard John Leon Schmidt

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Richard John Leon Schmidt on June 22, 2021 at the age of 74 years. Richard passed away peacefully at the Pasqua Hospital, Regina, Saskatchewan after suffering a stroke. 

He was predeceased by his parents John and Dorothy Schmidt; his brother Gary; brother-in-law Tony Kurtz; son Wade; nephew Johnny Schmidt Jr.; and father-in-law Helmut Kurtz. 

Richard is survived by his beloved wife Karen; daughters Lisa (Bob) Frei, Tracey (Glenn) Agnew, son Brent Schmidt; stepson Adrian (Sara) Arnason, stepdaughter Shannon Arnason; and his much beloved grandchildren Taylor (Kelsey) and Tristan Frei, Jadyn and Reise Agnew, Arianna Goodtrack, Kayli and Ava and Lily Arnason, James and Isabelle Rissling. Richard also leaves behind his brother John (Cheryl) Schmidt; sisters Doreen (Jack) Zess, Eileen (Scott) Robison, Donna (Lloyd) Fahlman and sister-in-law Peggy (Brian) Schmidt; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Richard worked in the IT industry for over thirty five years. He retired in 2001 from ISM Canada. Richard was an avid volunteer who coached sports teams, planned social events in their winter communities, served on the Prairie Co-op Board for 9 years and belonged to the Legion in Fort Qu’Appelle where he volunteered in many capacities. Richard was a passionate Toronto Maple Leafs fan who often offered his coaching and hockey tips via his FaceBook posts. Richard is known for his quick wit, delicious meals and being a self-taught craftsman who was very talented at fixing anything and often helping others with their renovation projects. Richard and Karen enjoyed travelling and spending their winters in California, Arizona and Bucerias, Mexico. 

A Celebration of Richard’s Life will take place on Saturday, July 24, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. in the Italian Club, 2148 Connaught Street, Regina, SK. 

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation may be made.

Oh dear Karen... I have just read the terrible news. I am so shocked and so sad. I see lots of people every day. I don't even know their names. There are just very few people who "impact" with their presence, light or energy, and Richard and you are two of those kind of people. I've always felt happier when I see you guys.
