Aaron Peter Schaefer

It is with profound sadness that the family of Aaron Schaefer announce his passing on September 29, 2012 after a courageous 18 month battle with brain cancer. Aaron passed away peacefully at home with his loving family at his side. Aaron will be lovingly remembered by his long-time partner Jody Shouldice and her daughter Kyla, parents Richard Schaefer and Alma Clark, sister Adrienne Schaefer (Richard Tremblay), nieces Sarah and Leah, and his nana Margaret Clark. He will also be lovingly remembered by many other extended family members and close friends. Aaron was born and raised in Calgary, graduating with honours from SAIT's Business Administration program in 1995. He began his accounting career in the oil and gas field in 1997 and continued working in this area until his diagnosis in 2011. He enjoyed many sports-related activities, having participated in slo pitch, hockey, golf, auto racing, and attending many Calgary Flames games over the years. Aaron also had a passion for aviation and was able to attend one final airshow in Whitecourt, AB in July. He was a very kind, gentle and generous man, supporting many local charities and sponsoring 2 children through World Vision. The family would like to thank the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and the Palliative Home Care Team for their support and care. At Aaron's request, no funeral service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Aaron's memory to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada at www.BrainTumour.ca. Arrangements entrusted to Alternatives Funeral & Cremation Services of Calgary.

Sincerest condolences to Jodi and the Schaefer family on the passing of a truly genuine person. A person of this quality is a direct reflection of the people he surrounded himself with, a loving and caring upbringing and a big, big heart. Aaron's character was attractive and easy to like and love and I am truly thankful I was gifted with his best friendship. Aaron is a role model in any situation. Jodi, Aaron told me more than once that you were an Angel, you and his family took great care of him. It was always a priority for him to take good care of you. I remember times working on the race cars or him helping me move and I would be boiling over mad at something and he would make the funniest of comments. I would go from boiling mad to bottom of the belly laughing with just one comment from Aaron. It was often a competition of who was going to be next to say the funniest thing. I will remember our road trips, our wrong turns, our we almost did it right the first time but we didn't, our muay thai kickboxing classes of trying to impress each other, our man dates to the local fight cards, our talks about the economy and how we always had the answer to fix the world or a particular sports team. I will always remember when.......... I miss my friend, a best friend, I love ya like a brother and I will see you again someday.

Oh Jody, Worst news possible. So sad that you have to go through this. I have no idea why these things happen but I know this. You gave him the greatest gift a human being can give another...your love. This gift made his life wonderful and his passing a little less terrifying. I also know that he loved you very much. Although I did not keep in touch with Aaron in later years, we played Atom/Bantam hockey (MESA / NASA) on the same team for over 4 years (’85 to ‘90). His name and picture on the back page of the herald instantly caught my eye. I was shaken. Out of most of all the guys I played hockey with (in my 10 plus years of youth hockey) Aaron stuck in my memory. It’s been a long while – but I remember him as a go-getter. A “digger”. The guy the coach would put on when we were short a man or we needed something to happen in the last few mins of a tied game. You always knew Aaron would put everything he got into it – and then some…. He was one of the few that had that “spark” and heart. I remember I admired him for this (even tried to keep up with him)! And even though we lost touch after hockey – I’m sure in his later years, he was that same go-getter guy – who never quit.
