April 3, 2025
Richard John Swanston, 69, of Tsawwassen, passed away unexpectedly on April 3. He was born in Vancouver in 1955 to parents Doug and Ella Swanston. A loving brother, uncle and friend, Rick will be dearly missed by siblings Ken (Paulette), Marci, Douglas (Jennifer) and Larry (Sylvie), nieces and nephews Amie, Michael, Denise, Matthew, Graham, Robin, Claire and Valerie, and great- nieces and nephews Livia, Raven, Bowen and Ayla.
During and after a long career with BC Ferries Rick traveled, hiked, and was a passionate birder and conservationist. He volunteered to document and protect the birds in and around the Reifel Bird Sanctuary, Boundary Bay, Point Roberts, the Tsawwassen foreshore, and the Fraser River Estuary. He was awarded the Davidson Award for Conservation in 2015.
No memorial is planned, in accordance with Rick’s wishes; instead, think of him and smile when you hear birds singing. Donations in Rick’s memory may be made to Nature Vancouver’s Conservation Fund: https://naturevancouver.ca/donations/
