George Joseph William Nicholson

George Joseph William “Bill” Nicholson, Born December 27th, 1933 in Noranda, Quebec, passed away peacefully in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 85years.  “Bill” was raised in Montreal and surrounding areas by Lucille (Laroche) & Charles Nicholson with his sisters Doris (Marcell Pichette – children Larry, Richard and Louanne) and Bernice (Stewart Patterson- children Gordon and Linda). He completed his engineering degree in 1950s. “Bill” was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force and traveled extensively until he joined the team that worked up north at the Distance Early Warning line (DEW line) for several years.   ”Bill” then worked at companies such as Bombardier, Canadaire & Nordair in a variety of instrumentation positions, one of the last ones being for the Montreal airport security surveillance system. “Bill” was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion for many years and served as a treasurer for the Lac des Deux Montagne’s Branch. “Bill” married Monique Trottier and together they had Gail Nicholson in 1961 with his grandchildren Katherine Nicholson, Kristian Nicholson and Joseph Nicholson, Caroline Nicholson 1963 with his grandchildren Cameron Kowal and Wesley Kowal, Donna Nicholson 1965 – 2019 with his grandchildren Nathan Nayel and Jason Nayel, Patricia Nicholson 1966 with his grandchildren Aimee Clavelle, Marcel Volett and Sarah Franzmann.  “Bill” was re-married to Edith Wood and had a stepdaughter Jennifer Ryder Lewis. “Bill” was blessed to have several nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and lifelong friends. “Bill” recently moved to Airdrie, Alberta from Lac des Deux Montagnes to live with his daughter Gail and to be close to his family.  A recent visit to Winnipeg was very much enjoyed as he was able to visit his longtime friend Patricia Isbister and her family as well as his daughter Caroline and her husband Adrian.  He also enjoyed a quick visit in the plane’s cockpit!   ”Bill” was fascinated by the Alberta Chinooks and enjoyed the floral and vegetable gardens of his new home and sitting on the porch bench watching the neighborhood. He looked forward to his weekly trip to the Airdrie Legion every Friday night to enjoy a glass of red wine or 2 and sing karaoke. Several ‘Family’ dinners were enjoyed by all that attended.  Dad even found his favorite smoked meat sandwich and poutine right here in Airdrie! “Bill” will be missed by ALL that met and knew him.  A special “Thank You” goes out to the Nurses, Doctors and Staff at the Peter Lougheed Center’s Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit. In lieu of flowers or donations please consider planting a tree and hugging your loved ones, most of all, make some amazing memories.
