Announcing the passing of Henry Nachtigall. Husband to his loving wife; Sarah Nachtigall, and father to three sons; Stephen Nachtigall, Doug Nachtigall and Conroy Nachtigall. Henry dedicated his life tirelessly for his family his community and complete strangers. He was always willing to help anyone who asked.
Henry was born in Eichberg Poland November 1937, during WW2 the family fleed the nazi invasion, heading toward germany where the family found work on a strawberry farm. Henry immigrated to Canada in 1959 establishing the path for his parents and siblings to make the move as well.
Aside from being a loving husband and father, Henry established himself as one of the few remaining Horticultural legacies in Alberta. Between 1963 and 1971 Henry worked as a manager for the City of Calgary Parks and Recreation dept, where he helped establish many of Calgary’s city parks and green spaces. His legacy can be witnessed through the hundreds of majestic trees that now grace our city. After a few years of farming in Water Valley he began his own business: Greenlife Landscaping, where he established himself as a prominent commercial contractor. During this time he established a tree nursery, and a tropical plant division installing and maintaing some of Calgary's best atriums. There are numerous landmark civic green spaces throughout Alberta that Henry installed that continue to be enjoyed by many.
Henry was strong in his faith and actively supported the german protestant community. Henry continued his passion for horticulture even throughout his failing health, growing and caring for plants as well as supporting his sons endeavors, and managing his business along side his loving wife. Whether strolling through one of Calgarys mature parks or walking the trails in Kananaskis and Lake Loiuse, we can remember Henry as one of this provinces horticultural legacies. We can be thankful for his passion for green spaces that bring people together through these many living examples throughout this province.
