Murray George

June 24, 2026

Murray George passed away June 24, 2026, with his wife, Cindy and sister, Helen by his side at Grace Hospice in Regina after a short, but hard-fought battle with cancer.

Murray was born to Arthur and Vera George, January 15, 1960, in Yorkton. The bouncing baby brother to two older sisters, Judy and Helen.

Murray married Brenda in 1986 and was blessed with two children, Kristine in 1987 and Garrett in 1990.

They kept him busy with sports growing up.

Murray met his wife, Cindy Matechuk (nee Kobylka), in 1999, and were married in Yorkton on July 13, 2013.

With four children between Cindy and Murray, it was a very busy household. They also accumulated a bunch of what Murray called, “bonus kids” and eventually “bonus grandchildren”. It started with Christie, Kristine, Amber and Garrett’s friends bestowing Murray with the “dad” title, and over time, added in their children bestowing the honorary title of “Grandpa Murray”.

Many family friends’ children also bestowed the title of Uncle on Murray.

Murray’s love for race cars, the Washington Capitals, the Riders and his family and friends was unmatched. Murray loved to go to auctions, and find weird things for his kids, especially when he could find them for a deal. Going up to Daniel’s cabin and quadding out there were favorite pastimes of his. His annual “boy’s trip” up to Billy’s cabin in the summer was something he looked forward to, taking gifts for the boys and this year, the 25th anniversary, is no exception.

Murray completed many educational degrees at Brandon University, culminating in his FCIP and teaching some courses in insurance. Murray’s career in insurance with Wawanesa, then Western Financial Group, then eventually working with his brother-in-law Danny in a totally different field, kept him busy as well.

Murray’s biggest joy in life was his grandchildren. First came Nevaeh (Garrett), the granddaughter who had grampa Murray wrapped around her finger from day one. Followed quickly by Christie’s stepdaughters, Taylor and Riley, and then Charlotte and eventually the grandson he had been [impatiently] waiting for, Cohen.

Murray was the go-to babysitter for all the grandkids. He always found little trinkets, toys and presents for all the grandkids. He spoiled them as much as he possibly could.

Left to mourn are his wife, Cindy of Pilot Butte, his children, Kristine (Adam) of Regina, Garrett of Yorkton, Christie (Chris) of Regina, and Amber of Yorkton. Grandchildren, Nevaeh of Yorkton, Taylor, Riley, Charlotte and Cohen of Regina, Sisters Judy Wright of Victoria BC, and Helen (Doug) Riecken of Sussex NB. Nieces and nephews Jessica and Kenny of Victoria BC, David (Kathleen and children Bennett, Liam and Charlotte) of Sussex NB, Michael (Bethany and children Isla, Ivy, Willow and Emma) of Yorkton. Along with numerous extended family members and friends, many of whom were like family.

Murray is predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Vera, his stepmother Margaret, his in-laws, and numerous friends and family who were all waiting for him.

Murray will be sadly missed, and his memory kept strong in the hearts of those who loved him.

No funeral will be held, a celebration of life will be held at a later date.

“It’s so hard to forget someone who gave you so much to remember.”
