Curtis John McLaren

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Curtis John McLaren, loving partner, son, brother, grandson, uncle, and friend. Curtis passed away on Sunday, June 6, 2021 in Red Deer, Alberta as a result of a sudden cardiac death at the young age of 28.

Curtis will be forever remembered by his cherished partner, Kaitlyn; parents, Carole and John; brothers, Dan Bolduc (Melissa) and Max St Cyr (Melissa McFarlane); grandfathers, Dwight Loree and Bob McLaren; two nephews, four nieces, and numerous other family members and friends. He was predeceased by his grandmothers, Janet McLaren and Gloria Pinter.

Curtis was always smiling and was known for his kind, compassionate nature and unwavering willingness to help others. He lit up every room he walked into with a free spirit which radiated joy and laughter to those around him. Above all, Curtis will be remembered for his big, loving heart. Ironically, his sudden cardiac death was caused by complications of having an enlarged heart – may we all find comfort in this beautifully ironic tragedy.

Curtis had a lifelong love for fishing and spent much of his free time with a rod in hand. He spent several summers at his family cabin in Shuswap Lake where some of his fondest memories were made. He worked in oil and gas, moving to Red Deer in 2012. Curtis began his journey with the love of his life in 2013 while they resided in different cities. The two decided that Kaitlyn would move to Red Deer after only 13 days together and were in the preliminary stages of planning the next chapter of their lives together.

His spirit and strength of character will live on in us, and we will be forever grateful for his presence in our lives. A Celebration of Curtis’ Life will be held at The Chalet, Westerner Park (4847A 19 Street, Red Deer) on Saturday, July 17th, 2021 at 2:00pm.

Messages of Condolence

Curtis was my cousin and my childhood best friend. We spend most weekends together either in Calgary or Red Deer. We took lots of family trips to Vancouver island to our grandpas house, where we would spend hours fishing out of a small dinghy in front of the house. Throughout our childhood we got into plenty of trouble, and memories that I will always remember. Curtis was, and is an inspiration to not only myself but anyone who knew him. He would never hold grudges, and always forgiving, trustworthy, loyal to anyone. He would bring joy, and light to any family event, or be the centre of attention. His skin was as think as an alligator, with a heart the size of the earth. Although we haven’t spend much time together in the last few years, i can still hear his laugh and voice clearly. Family events will be different without him, but I know he will be with us.

For someone wonderful to leave the world suddenly is heartbreaking for all of us. We will treasure the memories we spent together , the walks to Grassi lakes, Kananaskis Johnston Canyon, jet skiing at Sylvan Lake, Sunday brunches and family dinners. Knowing you was a blessing and you will always stay loved and remembered in every way.

Curtis and I, knew each other from grade 7 to grade 12. We spent most of our time outside with each other. With many different friends David, and Troy Slyker, Corrina, Dan, Austin. You name it they where there chillen. I’m pretty sure at one point in time I had a crush on you but we where young and stupid and nobody knew any better. But the moral of the story is the memories we had together. You would come to all my house party’s, I would come to yours to hang out, skate you know doing the young cat thing. We transitioned to high school and still our friendship didn’t change. We did day trips with friends together, party busses, late night outings tell like 3 am. I miss ya man I do. Even though years have gone by. I moved away and made new connections. I always told myself that when I moved back you would be one of the first people I would rekindle with. It’s a shame that life took you too soon. But you are always on my mind and I will never forget you Curtis !!

I was a newcomer back in grade 8 at Mountain Park School, in a sea of unfamiliarity. I remember how welcoming you were to me in class and that kindness you've shown me throughout my time at that school remains unforgotten. I cannot thank you enough for being so gentle with me during those times. Rest in peace, Curtis Mclaren.

Curt, there was many times I’d call Kaitlyn with silly anxiety and ask to speak to you because you always calmed me down and laughed at me. Your big heart will live on forever. You’re so missed down here. Until we meet again, my friend.
