Lorne William McConnell

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lorne William McConnell at Burnaby General Hospital at the age of 85 years.

Lorne was born in Chilliwack on August 18, 1937, to Walter and Muriel McConnell (nee Hambrook). During his school years the family lived in Armstrong and Lorne was very active in sports and 4H. He was very proud of his 1st place stock judging medal won in 1955. Lorne graduated from high school in 1957. He joined the Air force August 13, 1958, as a Radar Technician and was honourably released August 12, 1963. He completed a Diploma in Electronic Engineering Technology in 1965. Lorne landed a job with BC Tel (Telus) in November 1965 where he worked for 31 years until his retirement in 1996.

Lorne met Joyce Scambler at a party in 1974. Over the next 47 years they spent many happy hours together golfing, curling and on cruises with their group of dear friends. Lorne was an avid golfer and he attended “The Rustic Open” for the entire 26 years since it started without missing a single year!

Lorne leaves behind his niece Patti Marshall, nephew George Marshall (Terry) and their children, Jamie and Murray, cousins Gary and Dene (Wendy) Ferguson as well as many dear friends.

Lorne was predeceased by his parents Walter and Muriel McConnell, sister Norma Marshall, brother-in-law Norman Marshall and the love of his life, Joyce.

Thank you to St. Michael’s Care Centre and the palliative unit at Burnaby General Hospital for their care and compassion for Lorne over the past 5 months. The family would especially like to thank Lorne’s dear friends Dave and Mim, Betty, Sandra and Sabrina, Jonathan, Donna, Dan and Diedre for their visits, kind words, memories and love shown to our Uncle Lorne.

There will be no formal service at Lorne’s request. Donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are in the hands of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services in Aldergrove. Messages of sympathy can be left on their site www.MyAlternatives.ca

We curled for many years with Lorne in the TESAC League at the Marpole Curling Club. He was such a gentleman and lovely soul. He will be greatly missed.

I met Lorne several years back with the Marpole Masters league at the Marpole Curling Club. We played together and against one another. It was a pleasure to play with him. In 2012 we won gold in the Zone 3 playdowns. He will be sorely missed by everyone in Masters.

Keith & I wish to send our condolences to Lorne's family. He was such a lovely man with a very kind soul. Keith knew Lorne from BC Tel/Telus days & Sharen curled met Lorne curling many years ago. He was always so willing to cover for anyone in our group...mostly Ray & Dave in a curling Bonspiel. Such a great sport! We even got him dancing much to his chagrin. Will think of him with a smile always!
