It is with our deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our dear and beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Steve Marko.
Steve entered into the field of construction in the early seventies, becoming very respected in the industry first in the area of home building then progressing to infrastructure and roadwork. His talents took him across Canada then expanding to international sites, Turkey, Israel and eventually ending with Fluor Daniel in the USA. He was most proud of being a member of “the team” constructing the historic Confederation Bridge linking PEI to mainland New Brunswick. He was there at ground breaking through the years to completion. His dedication, energy and work ethic were phenomenal and a fine example to the young people he mentored as well as those he worked with and family members.
Steve was born to Alva and Ruth Marko, he wed his beloved wife Sarah (nee Dickson) on December 10, 1966, his forever love, who felt proud and privileged to be his partner in his life’s journey and survives him. Steve is also survived by his sons, Clint, Alva (Michelle); daughter, Stephanie Guenette (Pete); grandchildren, Jordan, Tegan and Mathieu Guenette, Caitlin and Logan Marko; mother-in-law Goldie Dickson (in her103 year); five brothers; one sister, and many nieces and nephews. Steve was predeceased by his parents and father-in-law James Dickson, one brother, and two sisters.
Steve’s accomplishments were many within his community of Strathmore he was the recipient of a silver medal at the Alberta Summer Games for golf in the 80’s as well as getting a hole in one which also occurred in the 80’s.
His earlier years as a young dad resulted in him being involved in Strathmore minor ball as Coordinator, Vice President & Coach and taking on the role of President of minor hockey. The involvement of minor sports lead him into committee work seeing him sitting on many boards and also lead to his role as Project Manager and Coordinator for the Strathmore Golf Club in the construction of a new clubhouse.
Steve was a member of the Strathmore Masonic Lodge, Past Master, Eastern Star Past Patron, Strathmore Golf Club, and Calgary Edgemont Racket Club. His leisure saw him enjoying time with family, as well as Golf, Squash, Baseball and Reading.
As a family we have been privileged and awed to have witnessed his endeavors and achievements we continue to follow his lead in doing our very best and “measuring up”.
Well done to a life well lived.
