Marinus Johannes Van Gaans

Marinus Johannes Van Gaans (November 7, 1927 – August 22, 2025)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Marinus, Dad, Rinus, Ray, Opa, who passed away peacefully with his family by his side on August 22, 2025, at the age of 97.

Born in Willemstad, Netherlands, in 1927, Marinus built a life defined by hard work and a profound dedication to his family. In 1954, he married his loving wife, Mary. They immigrated to Canada 1 week after they were married in that same year, first settling in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. By 1955, they had made their permanent home in Vancouver.

Marinus ran his own business as a bricklayer with his last job at the age of 72, often working six days a week to provide for his family. He was strong both physically and work ethic. He was gentle man who was happy and playful to his all children.. For over five decades, he and Mary created a warm and loving home in the same Vancouver house. Marinus and Mary were married for 60 years. That home was a haven for their three children, Gerry, Tony, and Marion, and later became a place filled with the joy and laughter of eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The last 3 ½ years he lived at Elim Village in assisted living and then in Long Term care. The care staff at Elim made his remaining years fulfilling, happy and respectful to him and his family, they were dedicated to his care and his family are very thankful.

Marinus will be remembered for his adventurous spirit that led him to a new country, and the strong foundation he built for his family, his love of singing. He leaves behind a legacy of cherished memories with the grandchildren, of songs sung, his humorous dress up with songs, his love for cards and many friends. He will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.

Celebration of Marinus’ life will take place on Sunday November 23, 2025 at 1:00pm at the Clayton Walk amenities building,18505 Laurensen Place, Surrey.
