Remembering Gig

With hearts full of love and sadness, we announce the passing of Marie “Gig” Stone, who passed away peacefully on October 5, 2026, at the age of 88, surrounded by her family.

Family was the heart of Gig’s life. She adored her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and nothing brought her more joy than bringing everyone together. She loved hosting, cooking, and baking for her family, filling her home with good food, laughter, and the warmth of being together. A game of cards was always welcome, and with Gig at the table, things could get a little out of hand in the very best way.

Gig cherished every one of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and took immense pride in cheering them on. Whether at dance recitals, volleyball courts, hockey arenas, baseball and softball diamonds, or football fields, she was a devoted fan. Her presence on the sidelines was a gift her family will forever treasure. Becoming a great-great-grandmother to sweet Miss Scottie brought her so much joy. Although they had not yet had the chance to meet, Gig glowed with pride and love for her newest little treasure.

Horses and harness racing held a special place in Gig’s heart. As the first woman driver in Western Canada, she helped pave the way for women in the sport. Racing gave her the opportunity to travel and see the country while doing something she loved. In retirement, she took delight in watching, cheering for, and placing a bet on her grandchildren who followed in her footsteps racing horses. Seeing her love of the sport carried into another generation brought her tremendous pride.

Retirement also brought treasured days at the lake with her family. She enjoyed boating, fishing, outdoor games, and walks with her beloved dog, Deja. A huge Saskatchewan Roughriders fan, she loved watching their games and cheering on the green and white. Her happiest moments were those shared with the ones she loved.

Marie was predeceased by her parents, Mary “Tillie” and Willard; her siblings, Edith, Bob, Carmen, Posh, Florence, Sherman, and Merla; and her dearest love and life partner, Joe Leepart, lovingly known as Grampy and Papa.

Her memory will forever be cherished by her sister, Linda; her children, Merla, Doug, John, Cheryl, Royce, and Jeffrey; her beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchild; and her many nieces and nephews.

Gig leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a family who will carry her love with them always. She will be remembered in every gathering around the table, every lively game of cards, every cheer from the sidelines, and every hoofbeat on the racetrack.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 17th, 2026, at the Hungarian Club (1925 Mcara St, Regina, SK S4N 2V5) from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Family is invited to lay Grammy and Grampy to rest together on Sunday, October 18th, 2026 at 11:30 a.m. in Punnichy, Saskatchewan.
