Ruth Agnes Lawrence (nee Gilbert) was born in Winchester, England, the first born of Ernest and Ethel Gilbert. She had six brothers and four sisters. She met and married Tom Lawrence during the Second World War and moved to Canada in 1946. Her and Tom farmed east of Carstairs until his passing in 1997. They had three daughters: Jenny (Ed) Grochmal, Susan Hughes, and Lou (Randy) Nail, and an honorary daughter Marlene Griffith from Watson Lake. She has six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Ruth was predeceased by her husband Tom, her parents, and all ten siblings. She was a lifetime member of Carstairs Dardanelles IODE of fifty years.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Carstairs Legion, Branch #53, 121 - 10 Avenue, Carstairs, AB on Friday, August 25, 2017 at 1:00 pm. Her ashes will be laid to rest at the Bergen Cemetery.

Messages of Condolence

I met Ruth in 1992 we became friends right away. I joined the IODE group after I met her. We spent a lot of time together working every Thursday in the IODE shop in Carstair's, together. She was a grand Lady who never said a bad word about anyone and always could tell a joke or two. There were times in later years where she was not feeling her best but never, said there was anything wrong. I would call a few times a month to see how she was and always oh I am just fine were her words. Remarkable lady. I visited her many many times in the Lodge where we would talk and remember all the people who visited the shop while we worked there over the years. She always had a smile on her face that lit up the whole room. The last time I went to see her, her last words to me were, say hi to my boyfriend for me which was my Husband Lorne it was a standing joke between the three of us and a little chuckle afterwards. Like always I said I will. Our friendship on earth has ended but I will never, ever forget her. Where ever you are Ruth I want you to know I will love you forever. I want to let you know that you are loved by everyone in my family and that your family has a unique and special place in our hearts. We can be apart by not seeing each other for years but as soon as we see each other again that special bond reunites and that love is there.
