Ian passed away on Saturday, January 29, 2022. Ian was born in Prince Edward Island and moved to Calgary in 1967 where his out-going nature and zest for life were appreciated by friends and colleagues.

He had an infectious spark that lit up a room. He ensured everyone felt welcome and was always available to lend a helping hand. Ian took pride in his home and enjoyed traveling, opera and the arts. Although constrained in later years by Covid isolation, Parkinson's disease and related dementia, he continued to enjoy friends, family and his favorite seafood.

Many friends, his brother, David, his nieces and nephews and his partner and best friend, John are thankful for Ian's life.

Thanks are extended to the wonderful care providers at Aspen Community, Chartwell Eau Claire and the Poplar unit Extendicare Cedars Villa.

Messages of Condolence

My sympathies to John and Ian's family. I went to Art College with Ian. My most vivid memory is from the early days of second year (1974). I was at the bookstore getting supplies and Ian snuck up on me from behind (no easy feat), and with a snarling AAArgh! playfully 'chomped' downward to the base of my neck. I was so startled I dropped to the floor, at which point the tables were turned. Ian was panicked, thinking he had killed me! "I worked a summer on the kill floor of a slaughterhouse, and you went down just like one of those cows!" he explained. I have never been able to reconcile the idea of such a kind, fun loving man working on a kill floor. I have thought of him often over the many years. The world was a nicer place with him in it.

Ian was a good friend. His presence at any gathering guaranteed a good time. His stories are legend. He was fun to travel with and always up for an adventure. He included and cared about so many in his life. Ian will be missed.

We loved seeing Ian and his partner John for many years on Friday evenings for a beer at the backlot. Ian always had stories to tell. He made us laugh so many times. His smile and warmth will be missed. We will cherish the times we spent with him.

I remember Ian from school days and YMCA Camp, and concur with so many thoughtful and enriching remarks about him on this site.
