Helmut Otto Ehrke

Helmut Otto Ehrke died 2025

With profound sadness and heavy hearts, we share the passing of Helmut Otto Ehrke. Helmut was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. He touched the lives of many with his kindness and generosity.

Helmut arrived in Canada at the age of 19, with only a suitcase in hand. He met the love of his life for over 65 years, Ingeborg, in Winnipeg. They soon departed for BC in a VW Beetle, daughter Sylvia in the back seat. They arrived in Vancouver, where Evelyn was born, and later when residing in Richmond, son Ralph joined our family. The family moved to a farm in Langley where he continued fabricating metal structures. He was generous in assisting neighbours with metal projects. Whether its a trailer hitch or a cup of coffee.

Helmut started one of his businesses on Mitchell Island specializing in iron and aluminum work. He was a gifted and talented man in these trades, with many of his projects still standing throughout the Lower Mainland. His legacy will live on through his family and the many projects he completed.Helmut and Ingeborg traveled to many countries. He instilled a strong work ethic in his children while also emphasizing the importance of having fun in life with family trips. Family was important to him. Helmut was passionate about fishing, whether in the open water while residing in Richmond or at their cabin in Sheridan Lake, with family and friends. Helmut was never too old to learn new passions, such as scuba diving at the age of 68.

Helmut is survived by his wife, Ingeborg, daughters Sylvia and Evelyn, and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Ralph. He will be deeply missed and remembered fondly by those who knew him. Helmut Otto Ehrke died in his sleep at the age of 85. We thank the staff at Guildford Seniors Village in Surrey, who were compassionate, respectful, and professional in caring for our dad/husband in his final years.
