Ian Stuart Glasgow

Ian “The Kid” Glasgow passed away peacefully in his home at 8:35 am Sunday morning, October 2nd, 2011 after a brief illness. He was 67 years young.

He is survived by his wife and best friend Dee, sons Scott and Mark, grandchildren Chad, Evan and Adam, as well as a large extended family. He will be greatly missed by each and every one of them. He was predeceased by his father Edwin Glasgow and mother Margaret Glasgow. Ian was always proud and loving towards his whole family and his friends and neighbours. The family wishes to express how very important these relationships were to him.

Born on January 17th, 1944 and raised in Calgary, Ian was a proud member of the United Association local 496 Pipefitters and Plumbers union since February 11, 1970. He was always a hard worker, but never forgot to leave time for fun and most importantly, his family. He always believed in “a days work for a days pay”. Having retired at the age of 55, for twelve years, Ian and his best companion of 16 years, Boots, had a passion for keeping an immaculate yard, keeping everything straight and level. His lawn always showed as the best on the block. With the newest additions to the family, Ian would always look forward to family dinners every Sunday which brought everyone together.

Ian wished to thank everyone involved in the healthcare system for the great care and attention he received during his illness.

The family will hold a celebration of life in Ian’s home on Saturday, October 15th 2011. An open house will run from 1:00 until 6:00 in the afternoon, and we wish to welcome all of Ian’s friends, neighbours and co-workers to attend.

Ian’s favourite poem:

“I like to walk with Grandpa, his steps are short like mine.

He doesn’t say “now hurry up”, he always takes his time.

Wee pebbles bright, a funny cloud, half hidden drops of dew.

My sincere condolences to Dee and Family on Ian's untimely passing. As high school buddies we spent many memorable days together. I remember working on some old clunker in my Dad's Garage or eating waffles that Mom made us for lunch. We lost touch over the years, but it sounds like Ian had a full and enjoyable life.

Ian, I am sure the ‘Big’ Guy welcomed you with open arms. In statue you were a giant of a man, very humble and always supportive of those you considered a friend. You were very introspective and never did I hear you say, or believe you would ever say, anything negative about anyone. You were a gentle man and as far from a bully as one can get. Years ago we spent two or three summer afternoons at your Mum’s house in that beautiful backyard up on North Hill there. Your favorite work philosophy was “stick and stay and make it pay” yet you did it with integrity, you had honor Ian. You found it very troubling being in an industry where ‘honor’ was so rarely found. Thirty years ago we were on you know what project making great money and I put my hand out and said “Ian, I need $500 from you, we are taking up a collection”. We had a colleague in the ‘Burn Unit’ who had lost a leg and had a long road ahead of him. The look on your face, I remained stern, you said “do you want it in twenty’s or hundreds”. Externally my friend you exhibited such humor and tranquility, internally you fought that toughest battle ............... Were you a good guy Ian ? you were one of the best me old mate. Bruce Davies

To Dee and Family-- What a shock it was to come home from two week's vacation and learn of Ian's untimely passing! We live[d] across the street from Ian for nearly 20 years, and always found him to be friendly, open, interested in everything going on in our lives and on our street. He always had a smile and a wave, a hello for the dog too, and a ready invitation to stop over for a beer, later. He was so proud of his yard, and took such excellent care of it too. But his biggest pride was in his family, you all, and in his beloved dog Boots. I know they are reunited now, and enjoying their walks like they used to. I hope this thought brings a smile to your faces and some comfort to your hearts, as you mourn the loss of Ian. Your lives [and our neighbourhood] will never be the same...... Hi Dee & Family, I recently returned from a 2 week trip to the Maritimes to visit family & as I was catching up on my reading of local papers I saw the obituary write up on IAN & was so surprised as I had not heard he was ill prior to my leaving on my trip. Ever since 1975 when Marilyn & I moved into this area we enjoyed our friendship with Ian. Whenever he walked by our home or I walked by his, I always stopped & we discussed the events of the world & hoped when we were done we had some solutions plus we had a personal relationship, which I valued very much. I always admired his interest & concern for others & we shall miss Ian greatly. Please accept our sympathy of your family’s great loss at this time. I plan to come by on Sat PM as invited! My sincere condolences to Dee and family. Ian and I went to high school together. He and George Edgar worked on my car in my dad's garage after school, more than once. Had many a good laugh while we were tearing it apart!!! We lost touch over the years as I moved away and returned several times.
